Help- upcoming Estate Auction
Scott L:
Hello All,
I’m needing some feedback on an AK I’m looking at that coming up at a local Estate Auction. I really have no knowledge of AK’s….what’s good, what’s bad, what to stay away. If I could get a little advice on a WASR 10/63 Romanian AK-47. I will attempt to link a picture, and I’m doing so not knowing how accurate the above info is. If you could throw me a value along with any other information, I certainly would appreciate…
I’m getting error trying to load pictures, I’ll try to figure that out….
LESchwartz:
In general imported AKs are much better than US-made ones. However, the fit-n-finish on the older WASRs is often poor, with canted sights, sub-par riveting, etc. Newer ones are a lot better. Inspect thoroughly prior to bidding.

Especially if it's a Century import you want to check everything Larry mentioned as well as mag fit.
Hodgie:
Depends on the WASR as well as the price it’s going for. I’ve owned several and they have all been good. The early ones built off real military AKM parts kits were always good in my opinion. The recent imports of the last 5 years have all been really good with the exception of the American wood furniture. Seems like the early to mid 2000’s could go either way.
Even if it’s in those year ranges if it’s a good price then it’s a good deal. Right now a new WASR will range from $800-$1000.00 depending on the vendor.

WASR 10/63 was built on new single stack receivers and used Romanian military parts. These came in via Century arms, and were converted to dual stack in the US. These were super popular in the window between the sunset of the AWB in 2004 and the Obama era panic buying. 10/63s are similar to the 10s, but have a the evil parts like a muzzle brake, bayo lug, PG, scope rail. They were sold with bayo and scabbard. At the time, these were very common at the gunshows going from between $325 and $340 with two mags, and a sling. The build quality was better than the 10s but not nearly as good as the preban SARs. At the same time, Century was selling 10/63 Select models, that were parkerized and the the wood saw some sanding treatment....with surplus mags in surplus condition. These were not as popular due to limited run, and at a price of $370 at the cheapest. They were a hard sell, when you can get a 10/63 right next to it for $50 less, and most guys were going to throw out the wood anyways. At the same time, Cenutry was selling the Unicorn "gold" 10/63s as the movie Lord of War was popular at the time. They were gold in color. I don't know if they were plated or had a gold Cerokote. I never see one outside of Century's website. Most likely, it's a good gun.
