Wow! That Yugo front end equipment is heavy. But really - if I wanted lighter I could loose all the mall ninja stuff. I just wanted it shorter.

I live in a small town. No sheriff/police station. The nearest sheriff's department is 30 miles away. I was home alone one night. Around 1am I hear someone at the front door. I young guy in a hoodie is jiggling the handle trying to get in. All I had was my double barrel 410. I called 911 and it took them 30 minutes to get there. Meanwhile the hooded man passes out in my front yard. Fortunately he turned out only to be a drunk high school student that thought he was trying to get into his own house. But I suddenly had the revelation - if this person had been serious about a forced entry and I had needed to defend my family - I am not sure if the double barrel 410 would have done the job. So the Yugo sits next to my bed (unloaded - but with ammunition accessible to me) at night. This makes it a little easier to move around if the need arises (and I pray it never does).

I am sure there are better weapons available for home defense. But this is my first firearms purchase (410 came from my grandpa). I wanted something right away (I live in Cali so I didn't want to wait for a pistol plus you have to pass a test to buy a pistol in Cali). And the SKS was the most affordable rifle (I am married and have 3 little girls so money is an issue) that I felt confident would "stop" someone. It was between the Rugger 10/22 or the SKS and the .22 was almost the same price. So I got my first SKS.

And I just realized I didn't even answer the original question! Yes - a hack saw and I flat file. I did not want to go that route. But I am a very impatient individual. The gun shop in town doesn't do gun smithing (he actually manufacturers big game/big bore safari type rifles). The auto shop in town said they could cut it down for me for $20. Then when I took it to them they said, "Oh - that came off of one of them evil black rifles. We can't cut that down after all". And a few other guys with more professional equipment (than a hack saw) were afraid they would be breaking the law by cutting it down for me.

I gave up. Got out the hack saw and sawed. Filed. Re-crowned. Not super happy with my work. I still have to take it out and see if it is going to cycle correctly.

What's wrong with the .410 round?  Get some of those PDX rounds from winchester, designed for the taurus judge.  Awesome defense ammo, and put a butt cuff on it to hold a couple reloads.  A double barrel makes a fine HD gun.  Their recievers are short, and in the event of a defensive shooting, that gun is now evidence.  When the jury sees your gran-dad's ol grouse gun, they're going to have a hard time painting you as a trigger happy gun nut.  The short over-all length of a side by side make it handy for a home environment.  Also very simple, nothing to stick or jam.  Then there's the issue of penetration.  Unless your using hollow or soft point ammo in your SKS, your definately going to go through a wall, where your wife/kids/room mate/dog/Xbox is sleeping.  Worse yet, your likely going to go through your perp.  I keep my SKS loaded with wolf hollow points.  I'm not saying the SKS is a bad defense weapon, just that the SxS .410 isn't, either.  They both have their drawbacks.

The best gun for defense is the first one you grab.
