my sks is stove piping live rounds
« on: November 02, 2018, 07:03:09 PM »
Hello everyone, recently my sks has been stove piping live rounds i have had 5 stove pipes and 1 double feed. My rifle is completely stock/original, cosmoline is cleaned out i have not changed any thing since i bought it. When i first shot it I put around 300 rounds through it all Tulammo FMJ and HP not a single problem. Fast forward 2 months i take my rifle to the range again same ammo and it stove pipes and the second to last round and over and over again it basically a coin toss from each i loaded it whether or not it would stove pipe.

Many things it could be.

Have you FULLY disassembled the rifle and cleaned it thoroughly?

Also a  more complete description of the problem will be helpful:
-Does it stovepipe on every round?
-When/if rounds do eject, how far are they being ejected?
-What kind of ammo are you using?
-Have you noticed any excessive contact wear between the bolt/carrier and the receiver well?
-What is the overall conditon of the rifle?
-And what national variant?

You will be doing yourself a favor by reading over past threads in this sub-forum, as this subject comes up frequently. Especially with those new to the sks.

Just realized that problem is "live rounds" that are stovepiping, not spent casings. Yes?

If so, this is likely related to and excessive width in the magazine feed aperature.

oh yeah sorry should of been a little more specific with my post. I have a Chinese sks and apparently it was a battle field pick up rifle from Vietnam. The rifle stove pipes mostly at the bottom of the magazine almost always second to last round.

Ah.

Luckliy have no personal experience with this type of feed issue with any of the 30 or so sks variants I have owned.

But this issue has been the topic of several threads in just the past year or two. Certainly in this forum. But, IIRC, it has been addressed on gunboards.com (sks/ak subforum) and akfiles.com (svt/sks/orphan subforum) as well.

My guess is that it may have something to do with how the follower is mounted. Maybe it is loose or askew?

I agree with follower and a cause.
Feed lips would effect most rounds.
If it is ONLY the last one or two rounds in the mag then the follower may not be holding them up properly.
In this pic you can see how the follower, the last round, and the next to last round should look.

If the rivet holding the follower is loose it will allow rounds to sag.
When the mag has several rounds the rounds help to align the top one.
When the mag is low on rounds then the follower controls how the rounds sit.

Check the rivet for flop.
Well I guess my new **** stirrin paddle don't work . I got a like . WTF 😈

YMMV but when I first got my Chinese SKS it did this, so I bent the mag lips in a bit and voila, no more double feeds. Lacking any other useful specification regarding width, I just made them match the width of my Yugos' mag liips.

How did you bend them?

Very carefully :)

With a padded vise. A tiny little bit at a time on each side to keep it symmetrical.

I use a small "tappy hammer" to adjust magizine lips.  To close them,  a short length of steel round stock is held against the inside of the curve while tapping (NOT HAMMERING!)

When opening lips , vise grip pliers are useful.  Set the jaws to just bend the lips as they cam over.  DON'T Trust your feel.  Use the adjuster screw.

Say RV, looks like you experienced a Popped Primer there. What did it do to the firing pin? You do know we have a 100% guaranteed cure for that now, right? https://murraysguns.com/sks-neck-throat/

If you feed it junk ammo, why should you expect filet mignon results? Well now you can, with our new "Neck & Throat" chamber reaming service!

I have the high res image someplace but that is likely a shadow.
Pic was taken 6 years ago, no problem since.
