Chinese vs. Yugo differences?
« on: December 01, 2019, 05:55:54 PM »
I bought my first SKS- a 1966 Chinese model, this fall and have really been enjoying it.  I have a line on a never been fired 1971 Yugo.  Are there any significant differences between these two rifles?

There are a bunch of minor differences.  Plus there's the grenade launcher on many Yugos.  Fit and finish tend to be better on the Yugos as well.

However, the most significant is that the Yugo does not have chrome lining protecting the bore.  My experience is, depending on weather in your area, the bore will need oiling, etc. much more than the Chinese.

Hey CoffeeNut, post up some photos so we can feast our eyes on your Chinese carbine. Same with the Yugo if you get it...go ahead, you know you want to!

The Chinese norinco sks has a chromelined bore and chamber. Hugo’s don’t. The Yugo has a larger bore size. Accuracy can be a problem. I have Yugoslavia’s but my Chinese sks I enjoy more.

Not sure if the bore is larger.  I found my Yugos a touch more accurate.

This has been my experience as well.  My Yugo is a helluva shooter with Golden Bear ammunition.  I have a chinese letter gun that is a close second since I installed tech sights, but the Yugo is still a little better.

The bore in my Yugoslavian is no bigger than my Russian Tula or the wife's Chinese. My Yugo M59/66A1 shoots marginally but consistently better than the other two with white box Barnaul and Red Army Standard.

My Chinese norinco sks’s using the norinco yellow box ammo will shoot 1 1/2” groups at 100 yds.

My Yugo is a better shooter than my Norinco's. And yes, it is "beefier" than the Norinco's. My '53 Russian is my best shooter though.

Both my Chinese Norinco 16” & 20” barrels will shoot 1 1/2” at 100 yds using yellow box norinco ammo I still have one opened 1440 rd crate and one full crate.

Another difference that I have noticed is the sear in my Yugo59/66A1 will not fit in my '53 Russian Tula or the wife's Type 56.

I know this is an older post but another difference I can add;  the trigger group from a Chinese will not fit a Yugo, the safety to trigger group latch spring clearance is different. If you can get the trigger group to latch in place the safety cannot be rotated to the off position.

I have a "made for export" Norinco, I forget the year. It seems really tight and very well made. The bore is crisp and clear, but I haven't really shot it for accuracy yet. My favorites are Yugos, but mine both came with barrels that look like sewer pipes. Hoping to replace with a nicer barrel at some point.
Beware of the bore condition on any Yugo. Take a Bore Snake and a small flashlight with you when you do the deal so you can check.
Finally, don't be a sucker. There are no "unfired" SKSs. If it looks new, it probably has new or refurbished parts. Either way, it doesn't increase or decrease the value unless that's actually important to you.
