Firing pin retainer will NOT budge, looks damaged?
« on: August 02, 2020, 09:59:07 PM »
I know this is a common problem, and I've tried a bunch of stuff, but my firing pin retainer will NOT move. I picked it up a few months ago and this is the first chance I've had to clean it. There's no sign of cosmo anywhere, and I let the bolt sit in mineral spirits overnight and nothing came out. The firing pin rattles around so I don't think there's anything in there. One problem I'm having is that it looks like the previous owner used the punch in the cleaning kit to to try and pop out the retainer but the punch is bent and the retainer and retainer lip looks smashed (see pics below) and is flush with the bolt edge so it's really hard to get a punch (I'm using a proper punch, not the bent one in the cleaning kit) to sit properly, and it tends to slip around when I hit it with a hammer. There are a number of things I haven't tried yet, but I want to make sure I'm not further damaging the retainer or the retainer channel.

Support is the key here.  A solid surface like a concrete slab, a socket and a two pound mall.
The weight of the moving mall has inertia. A lot of it.   With a solid backing all of the hammer momentum will be transferred to the pin through
a 1/8 inch STEEL punch with a flat end, not pointed.

I use a modified punch.  Tip cut off to about 1/4" long and ground flat.

We have a sticky here for firing pin removal; if you, follow the instructions EXACTLY, you will be successful in getting the pin out and the bolt disassembled.

Years back I took a front sight adjustment tool and rigged up a bolt for firing pin retainer removal. Works like a charm and no whacking your thumb/fingers trying to break the pin loose for the first time.

:banghead: I supported my bolt between two pieces of oak I cut from pallets. It was still hard to come out but it finally did.
