Replacing Chinese gas block with Yugo gas block
« on: June 04, 2021, 10:58:04 AM »
I know this is probably old news but is it possible to swap a Chinese gas block with a Yugo gas block so as to have the gas shut off funtion? I want to build some low pressure( subsonic maybe ) ammo from reloadable brass cases and using maybe TrailBoss powder. I want to shut off the gas so as to not throw my brass 20 to 30 feet away. I want it to cycle like a bolt action. So i have two questions:
1. Can the swap be done?  :banghead:
2. Do you have spare Yugo gas blocks and tubes for sale someone could purchase?

Generically speaking, yes. Yugos were built more robust than the other flavors so tolerances may be slightly different, but we are talking .001"s probably. It would be the luck of the draw as to if you got one that had the correct negative dimension to be pressed on correctly. You may be better off finding a beater M59/66 to do the job for you. Their non-chrome-lined bores are inherently more accurate anyway.
Another option would be to remove said gas block altogether then drill and tap the gas port so as to insert a set screw plug. If you went scope only you could then leave the FSB off as well then cut/crown the barrel and add a muzzle device.

The barrel is cut down to 16.5 inches and an after market front sight is bolted on. Thinking of threading 5/8-24 or going the 14-1 LH route and install a good muzzle brake with 11/16-16 od thread for a BFD or a form 1 CAN.

You would have to turn down the OD of the barrel to fit a 14mm on there. At 16.5" a 5/8" device is about right IIRC.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing. There are plenty of muzzle devices for AR10'S that have 5/8-24 threads. I have one BFD on my AR15 556 16" barrel. Could put a BFD on my AR10 and use the flash suppressor off the AR10 on the SKS barrel. I still want to shut off gas to protect my reloadable brass shells. :flagwave:
