Barrel swap etc.
« on: January 21, 2022, 10:18:53 AM »
Just a couple questions.
First how hard is it to swap a barrel on one of these Yugos?
Is it a lot of trouble to get everything lined up et al?
Finally, are the barrel parts (sight block and gas block) interchangeable?
I would be swapping a Yugo barrel on to another Yugo and they are both clocked at position 1. I would also possibly be putting the sight block and gas block from a Yugo onto a Chinese KSI import.
Thank you in advance,
Gator

It's not as straight forward as you think. The barrels are indexed to the receivers, matched with corresponding clocking numbers. PAX

I don't know much about this subject when it comes to SKS barrels.  However, AK barrels are stamped with a series of numbers to indicate the relative size of the journals.  "1" is for undersized, "2" for nominal, "3" for oversized, etc.  This indicates to me that Com Block manufacturing is not quite as precise as we might hope -- I imagine that you will need to do some research before assuming you can swap components from one barrel to another.

Yugo's are usually more robust than Chinese and it will be possible that the Yugo barrel parts will be loose on the Chinese barrel.

As for the swap Yugo to Yugo, if they are both indexed at 1 (10 degrees) then you will at least be very close, but you will still need to verify headspace, etc. I checked with Ben Murray on doing one for me as I don't have the tools anymore to do it myself. He gave me an estimate of up to $200 depending on how much machining he had to do to get the timing and headspace correct.

Once upon a decade, Yugo barrels were available. PAX

Yes, the barrels are both marked "1" so they should be close, SKS close anyway.
As for the barrel parts swap, I guess I need to do some measuring and stop being lazy. I won't start taking them apart if I'm not pretty certain it will work. I will make sure to report my findings if I do proceed.
I appreciate everyone's input.

I do have some experience with replacing Yugo barrels. Total done only 3, but they all 3 lined up well enough that there was no issue at all with the installation. Paying someone $200 to install or swap a Yugo barrel is fine if you want to spend your money on it. But I personally have been fortunate to not have had any problems doing it myself. I've also used a Yugo receiver to restore a Russian SKS including putting Russian barrel on Yugo receiver myself. Once again no problems. Fires reliably.

Is there a good source for barrels that will work for this gun? I'm not picky here. This gun was very incomplete when I got it, so no collector value. I'll use a Chinese, Russian or other barrel if that's what it takes as long as it has that "1" stamped on it. I've scoured the webs and had very little success.

It's tough to find the right barrel index number to the receiver's number. I had a Romy receiver for 15 years and never could locate the correct unit. PAX

Yeah, that's about what I expected. Maybe not the 15 years, but I didn't expect to see a bunch of them just out there.
Thank for the input.

Quite a few barrel assemblies with front receiver stub on GunBroker. Even have a factory replacement yugo barrel. Those will head space really close but need to have the extractor cut in the face and rear sight block fit. Best to just buy threaded one with stub.
