Rebarrel a Yugo With 7.62 Barrel Liner?
« on: March 30, 2022, 08:59:08 PM »
So I've been going thru my various SKS parts and firearm parts in general when I came across 43 inches of 7.62 barrel liner, made in USA. And as most of you probably have, I have at least one or two Yugo's that have not so great barrels. Does anyone know of a really good gunsmith who would be able to use some of the 7.62 liner to rebarrel a Yugo?

I'm not sure if a standard 7.62 barrel liner will work, as 7.62x39 is actually 0.311 instead of 0.308.  Double check before proceeding.

That being said, you might want to contact one of our the smiths down in the business section to see if that's a service they offer.

This is why I ask questions before doing anything. Thanks for the input.

Well now that just sounds like an invitation to convert one of these things to .300 BO. Always wondered if that would be a feasible or practical conversion. With the Yugo, you could shut the gas off and add a can to make for some really quiet fun. Or an alternative would be to us a .22 liner and convert to 5.45x39 for an "SKS that never was" conversion.
I have a couple of Yugo barrels with a lot of pitting in the bore so I've been thinking of what my options are.
Thanks for getting my creative side thinking about this,
Gator

Anything is possible given enough money . . .

The real issue with switching calibers is going to be feeding issues.  Both the 5.45 and the .223 cases are narrower than 7.62x39.

If you were to go .300 black out then one could one get the Marcus mag adapter that uses AR pattern x39 mags, and use standard 5.56 AR mags in it with the 300 black out?

Absolutely! I didn't think about that until after I posted. That would be a sweet little gun. I'd say one could get that worked out for less than a Mini .300 if you got a deal on an solid gun with a sewer pipe barrel. Oh, the possibilities!
