Survivors SKS Clewiston Event mini-reunion February 2025
« on: February 02, 2025, 11:01:09 PM »
For those of you that have been longing for a return to our old camping/shooting event in Clewiston - we did it without you!

Just kidding.  No such luck I'm afraid, but I'd been looking toward trying to set up something myself and contacted a couple of the local guys who it turned out were independently also trying to see if something could be worked out at a similar spot just north of Lake Okeechobee.  In the meantime, they decided to all meet up at the old range, which is still open to the public for a daily fee.  I was able to horn in on their action, and I even made it there more or less on time for once.  It was great seeing these guys, but it was a little bittersweet.  I was reminded of a meme I saw sometime ago about how once in your youth, you and your friends all went out to play for the last time and didn't know it.  Well, back in 2018 we all attended the last of these events and didn't know it.  Hard to believe it's been over six years.  I did want y'all to know though, that several of us are still busy trying to see if something can be set up.  In the meantime I wanted to post up a couple of pictures.  Liam showed up to for a bit just to visit, but he didn't do any shooting.  As you can all see, he now cuts quite the profile in his police uniform.  He's now a K9 handler apparently, and he's married and has a child.

BTW, the area is a bit different than the last time we went.  Two huge pre-fab metal buildings have been erected in the eastern portion of what used to be the camping area.  I'm not sure if the covered area that used to serve as the kitchen still exists.  Also, a large sand berm has been placed in the pistol area making it shorter, though it's a bit strange since it doesn't go all the way back to the original back berm so there's technically a small enclosed area back there (which I did not explore).  Some of the older more decrepit structures seem to have been removed too.

The groupshot is of: Liam, Eric Bresnahan, [REDACTED], myself, Will Perry, and Steven Brehm.  A few of them brought their kids too, and two of them are standing up front.

I'm trying to post a couple more pictures but the system is giving me trouble so I'll try again later.

I managed to get a Google Earth image of what the campsite looks like now, though it doesn't show the new berm in this shot.  It looks like there's only about half the camping space as before so even if we could manage to rent it out, it would be a pretty tight squeeze and I can't tell if the "kitchen" area is still there.

Here are some pictures at the range.  Steven seems to have lost some weight, but still manages to mostly cover me.  I'm actually standing right behind him.

Here's what the pistol side looks like now that they've added a sand berm up closer.  Strangely, it doesn't go all the way to the end so you could walk around it.

At the end of the day we went to a restaurant at the LaBelle Yacht Club where we met up with the man himself; Ranger (Andy) who used to put together the events back in the day.  It was great to have an opportunity to catch up.  Food wasn't bad either.

One last one.  The file size limit really threw me in trying to get these pics posted.

I will say that the one way this range time reminded me of the old shoots is that I once again forgot to take any good pictures.  Several of the ones I posted I got from the other guys (with permission of course).

Never made it to an event due to distance and other life stuff that always seemed to get in the way, but always wanted to go. Thanks for posting, it DOES look like you guys had fun.

It WAS fun, but I didn't even do that much shooting.  It was just fun hanging out with the guys and shooting the breeze, and letting the kids shoot a suppressed UZI for the first time.
