AK47 Loading Issue
« on: November 03, 2020, 04:31:27 PM »
I purchased an AK47. Every magazine I tired has worked fine, except the drum mag. When the drum mag is inserted I can’t load the first round as the handle only goes 1/2 back. Any ideas?

I’m wondering if the spring pressure pushing the ammo into the mag well is enough that the charging handle needs extra force to clear it? Not trying to knock your purchase but I’m cautious of AK drums that aren’t milsurp, which yours doesn’t look to be?

Are you able to decompress the spring and don’t wind it as tightly when you try it again, perhaps easing some of the pressure?

contact PROMAG and return it for another one.

other then that, PROMAG doesn't have a stellar reputation for making functional mags.  sometimes though they make them right..........took a chance and bought their HK33 mag, because they were 12 bucks so I  decided to roll the dice, and surprise, surprise it worked perfectly.  :)

so i bought several more.........beats paying 80 bucks for one factory HK mag

Why drums mags aren't all that great:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d69pw4PcBmE&vl=en.

One of the reasons mentioned is that it's hard to manufacture a reliable drum magazine . . .

Have you tried not fully loading the drum?  Maybe you are creating a lot of spring pressure?  I would load 10 rounds and see if it works.  Then step up until the issue presents itself. - Kyle

Thank you everyone for the feedback, I purchased a metal surplus drum and it worked without issue. This was my first, and last, time buying a “pro mag”. The spring does seem to be the issue as the drum feeds ok if there is less then 20 rounds in it. I will try contacting their support and/or taking it apart to see if there is anything that can be adjusted.

unlike PPsh and SUOMI drums where you can tighten or loosen  the spring tension  easily, by removing the follower and adding or loosen the tension on the spring by  a couple of revolutions to the spring housing then replace the follower......... you can't  do that on the AK drum,  the spring  is  wound up in a set position in the spring housing, only way to adjust the spring tension  is by the wing nut, so removing the internals to get to the spring housing will be  futile

you can review a YOUTUBE video and you can see what I'm talking about

like I stated before, contact PROMAG to send the drum back for a replacement

It's less spring and more free space that's causing the problem. When your bolt goes back it needs to depress the stack of cartridges to get by. You can check this in a few different ways. One is removing one cartridge and seeing if it cycles normally. The other way is with the mag out, try depressing the first round in and see if it moves down far enough to let the bolt go by.

Glad you tracked down a milsurp one OP. They aren’t cheap, but they work great.

I contacted ProMag in late January 2020 by letter after speaking with "Jack of Tech Support."  Jack emailed a Return Authorization Number and agreed to take back four SKS mags and replace them with pistol mags that I knew worked- two Glock 17 and two M&P 17 round both double stacks.  It was a good trade.
