1851...
« on: January 01, 2025, 01:28:40 AM »
down the rabbit hole I go... after almost 30 years, out of the blue, I decided to get back into black powder.

I found these two "used" but unfired brassers for not a whole lot.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of time and money I can waste on another hobby.

I have a few of them. My favorite is the 1858 NMA. Most accurate (consistent) one I have. Be careful with loads on the .44 brassers, as the soft frame will print deeply on the recoil shield, increasing the cylinder to forcing cone gap. I have one brass .36 that actually pulled the arbor out of the frame. I use lubriplate on the arbor, seems to keep the fouling soft enough that I can shoot the "Colts" quite a while before they get too gummed up. I'm using 2f triple 7 for both rifle and pistol. Make sure you cut a nice ring of lead when you ram them home. I have one .36 Uberti that MUST have .380 round ball or it will chain fire, all the rest work just fine with .375. Beware of soft hammer springs. The hammer blows back and the caps pop off...and go DIRECTLY into the action...(cap jam).

I have a couple more steel framed .36 versions. Been considering a cartridge conversion.

I only have one, a 1858 Rem from Uberti I get out and shoot once in a great while, but lots of fun and smoke.

My Uberti 1858 in 44 and a 1875 in 357mag.

Just purchased a used 1858 Remington replica by Pietta.
Steel frame, 8".
Pictures when it gets here.
Will have to collect supplies and a nice display case before Valentines Day :)
EDIT:
Looks like the used 1858 got snagged  by the USPS.
Has been within 30 miles of home for 6 days.
Went to Slidell and bought a new one.

I don't plan on anything more than about 15gr. there is no reason to abuse them.

the price was right to get my feet wet in the BP revolver world, now I can gather enough information about the what/how/why in order to find the right steel frame pieces.

I came upon an unbelievable deal on a couple of unfired Piettas last Spring and have since become addicted to them. The Reb44 and '61 Army are lots of fun to shoot.
