PAP, would it be possible for you to ask him if he has any photos of scopes and/or night vision devices that were used with the SKS rifles?

In response to this topic, I chose to start new one so everyone can see, and hopefully remember for future references.

Here is the skinny on chrome lined barrels in Yugo weapons including of course sks.
I wrote to Mr.Branko Bogdanovic , asking him what was the reason why Yugo sks were chromeless.
For those that don’t know who he is, Branko is THE leading authority on all Yugoslavian weapons, and also Kragujevac factory historian. Of course, Kragujevac is the one and only Yugo factory that produced small arms in Yugo.
His response:

The technology for producing chrome and nickel existed in Slovenia’s steel mills ( one of the former Yugo republics, now independent state) in 1950.
But, technology of actually applying hard chrome in barrels, began after1970 in Kragujevac factory.
First chrome barrels were produced in M70 automatic rifles ( Yugo Kalashnikovs), and Yugo automatic pistols Skorpion 7.62 mm M84 ( Czech scorpion M61)

So, in short, Yugo had/has plenty of chrome, the know how just came late, after 1970.
It has nothing to do with Russians, cost prohibitive, or else.
My correspondence with Branko was in Yugo language, I did my best to translate.
I hope you find this interesting
Best regards

Dan

I find this to be a lie. on this, "My correspondence with Branko was in Yugo language"  Their is no such thing. And if you did speak any of the offical languages of Yugoslavia -"Serbo-Croatian",Slovene, and Macedonian  you would know the name of the one'(s) you speak respectively

Wow, it’s amazing how some people will pick on the little things to make an argument, without contributing to actual tread.
So, what is the big lie?
I’m Croat by birth, he is Serbian, the language is basically same except the accent .
What difference does it make to you personally?
For ease of understanding, and origin of the language, I used the word Yugo, my GOD, sorry for a big mistake.

I have wondered about this for a while.  It appears that the first chrome lined barrels the Yugos made were the very latest and last of the M70 AK series, then all of the 5.56 rifles of coarse.    It is fairly well known that Yugoslavia is one of the greatest chrome oar containing areas in europe/asia.

Not likely being most commercial rifles don't.

I studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute and I believe you 100%.  You were speaking Serbo-Croatian if I'm not mistaken, and you simply referred to it as "the Yugo language".

I have not seen any chrome barrel SKS yet. The ones at the local gun shops are all very worn dark bores. :(

Wow,shut him up awfully quick!   Anyways......

Mine's not chrome, but it sure looks like it when you look down into it. It was never fired when I got it a few weeks ago,so she's still nice and shiny and looks like a mirror inside after you clean and oil it. Did they polish them after they were rifled or machined or whatever for them to look this way or was this just the end result of the rifling/machining? I'm not sayin they did it so it would look nice,I'm just asking how they went about the process. Anyone know? Sorry to hi-jack,just realized I was.....

OK, I've got two M59/66 Ygo SKS rifles. Both are 1977 production and have very bright & shiny new looking bores. Are they chrome lined?? How does one tell  if a barrel is chrome lined or not? At least on the Chinese SKS Type 56 Carbines you can actually see a ring of chrome on the muzzle end of most.

Try starting a new post for questions like this as people really don't go in this thread for q&a. No yugos are chrome lined. Read the whole thread, or at least the first few pages, and you'll see that this really isn't a point of debate anymore.

Thanks for your reply. I read all of the postings in this thread before asking my question but really could not determine what the real answer was. Being a newbie to this board I guess I'll have to spend some time developing my learning curve a bit.

Thanks - FR&G
