SKS Slam Fire & the Cure (video)
« on: January 20, 2010, 12:55:47 PM »
This video is of a customers SKS that looked relatively clean overall. Even the bolt looked clean from the outside, but as you'll see, what was found on the inside of the bolt and stuck to the firing pin, caused serious slam fire problems.

Don't let this happen to you, unexpectedly!! At the very least, disassemble and thoroughly clean your bolt, especially the hole that the firing pin fits in.

I'm the proud owner of a 1954 Tula SKS as of Monday. I've not received it at my FFL yet but I want to order one of your firing pin/spring combos. What brand of stone do you use to resurface the bolt face? I really appreciate all the hard work you put in for the SKS community, your videos are a life saver, literally and figuratively!

Congratulations!! You got a good one.  8)

Brownells sells Spyderco ceramic stones and we like this square one: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=30341/sku/Square_Ceramic_Stone

Fits the area of the bolt face that needs attention better than any other size/shape we've tried. We put a little honing oil on it before each use and it has held up to hundreds of uses while remaining flat, and cleans up easily.

Placed my order for the new firing pin finally. I also ordered the ceramic stones you suggested and I already have a super fine bevel stone to add the negative bevel. Now I need to find just the right punch to free the pin from the bolt.

Thanks for offering these to the SKS community Murray! You are literally a lifesaver I'm sure.

A 1/8" punch is the size you'll need to go all the way through without binding against the FP. 5/32" will work to start the RP out but it will bind up against FP and become difficult to remove.

Or, mr. coinring here on the Boards is coming out with a bolt that can be used with a front sight adjusting tool to push the RP out.

Finally here and to be honest, the retaining pin was a breeze to pop out.. er well, a couple of medium taps and it popped right out. Thank goodness for a fresh arsenal refurb without any bubbas in the mix eh? Cleaned out the FP hole with brake cleaner and a pointed nylon brush and then spritzed the whole thing in some Hoppes oil and reassembled it. Did the same for the gas block and piston tubes, it's smooth as butter and ready to go shooting for the first time tomorrow!

Thanks for everything guys, I'll post more when I get the camera cable finally!

I also found that a cosmoline filled bolt will slamfire as well.  The bolt should make a clicking sound because the firing pin should be free floating so to speak.  Luckily, when I first got my norinco, it had oodles of cosmo residue.  Afterwards, I cleaned the hell out of it and all is well.

Welcome to Survivor's....

It's customary here to introduce yourself before simply posting numerous questions; most folks also post a pic of their rifle and tell us a bit about how they came to own it, etc.....

As a new member, I would urge you to  read the forum rules carefully, and use the search feature at the top of the page, which works very well.....

By simply coming on as a new member and asking abrupt questions from your very first post, you are walking into what is essentially our clubhouse and being rude.....

So please, take a second , introduce yourself, get the feel of the place, and enjoy the atmosphere  a bit.

Goodness yes,
Get the cosmoline out of the bolt.
I can't tell you why because of site regulations.
And trust Murray (sorry Murray, it's been a few years, and I may have a bucket of usible parts, but can't sell them here.)
But the Murray fix is a must for anyone that wants to shoot.
Thanks Kurt

You really are going to have to point out to me the "regulation" that says that you cannot tell someone to clean the bolt and firing pin channel really well in order to minimize the risk of slam-fires.   That advise has been posted hundreds of times here and will be posted again and again as new members show up.
