7.62x39 prices?
Hodgie:
When did 7.62x39 start costing more than 223/5.56? I haven?t been looking at ammo prices in almost two years until tonight and holy crap! 😳
I know the Russian Sanctions caused a spike a few years ago but prices and availability were nothing like they are now. I personally have more x39 then I will ever need, but these prices make me think I should maybe off load some to fund some other projects.
Any other calibers go bat **** crazy in the last 18 months?
Onepoint:
Banning Russian imports along with the small arms treaty keep a lot of surplus out, sadly 5.45x39 is also expensive now.

For years I was a huge fan of 5.45x39 for plinking at the range. I stocked up on about 10K rounds back when it was $0.10 / round. But then came the 7N6 ban, followed by the import ban and the pandemic. I sold off my stock of 5.45 ammo and rifles during the pandemic and never looked back (also fought cancer and pruned back my collection back in the day). Some may call me a "profiteer", but I just couldn't justify shooting anything that was that expensive . . . it just wasn't "fun" thinking every shoot was costing me at least 5X what I originally paid.
Now I see that a similar thing is happening with 7.62x39, though not as bad as with 5.45. Russia was pretty much the only supplier of 5.45, but many former eastern block countries can do 7.62. With 7.62, I expect it's a supply and demand thing -- I would bet that something like 1/4 of the worlds supply of 7.62 is unavailable to US buyers due to the import ban. I also expect that worldwide demand for 7.62 is way up thanks to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. I expect that the wars will eventually end. Though I fully expect that for the foreseeable future 7.62 will be more expensive than 5.56.
Still when adjusted for inflation, many popular calibers are approaching something like reasonable. Deals are still out there, keep an eye out and stock up whenever a caliber you shoot goes on sale.

That and global conflict is on the rise due to weak US leadership. China is pushing harder in pretty much every region in the pacific, russia is pushing harder in nearly every region in europe, south east asia is beginning to turn into a powder keg, the middle east is flaring up. At this point africa seems to be the only quiet (quiter than normal) spot left in global conflict.
Aside from that gun cotton is getting held up. And China is the main producer.

I keep thinking about all that Albanian ammo that those two @$$#0les depicted in the movie War Dogs got in trouble for trying to sell. Yeah, it turns out it's mostly Chinese manufactured, but they really got in trouble for trying to hide this instead of attempting to go through legal channels. I'm wondering if someone could figure out a way to import it legally. We shot cheap and reliable Chinese ammo for years. I wouldn't mind going back to that.
BTW, If you're just looking for surplus ammo, I got an ad from AIMSurplus last night. They seem to have the Yugo crates (without the stripper clips) and if you buy the equivalent of one crate, you'd get it for about $6.79/15 round box, which is basically around $9/ box of 20. Man I miss those days of that $5 Chinese ammo and I really miss that 10cent/bullet East German ammo). The down side is that to get that price you have to buy 84 boxes which comes out to just over $570. Still, it's the only surplus I've really found recently.

Ironically, you'll probably pay less for new production ammo. Looking on Ammoseek right now, the cheapest you'd get it is some Sterling brand steel cased for about 37.5cents/round.

Really though, you should just check Ammoseek regularly, they do a pretty good job of breaking down the current prices on all ammo and giving you the links to make the purchase
