What? You one of those tree huggers :)

:)

You like that Canon?
My venture into DSLR was the K-r.
I had a bunch of K mount stuff so it was a pretty easy choice.
It's a low end DSLR and some things I like about it, some I don't.
I managed to get FOUR broken K-r's off ebay and all but one had small functional problems.  Flashed the firmware and one is just a spare parts camera.  I could probably use it to fix the other 3.
One stuck button, one flash inop, and one doesn't have audio record.
I don't remember if it was the $20 one or the $5 one.
K-r, butterfly
Clickable, EXIF in link

then another with a 300mm FA lens at about 50 feet.
f/5.6, 1/80, ISO800.

and just a few minutes ago in a drizzle, snake eyes (K-r)
Photobucket

My FZ70 is getting long in the tooth but still amazes me.
I have to watch low light situations more with it compared to the DSLR but it's my 'Every Day Carry' :)
Range trips, hikes, vacations.
I've thought about getting another off ebay but for $100 to $150 for a used one, it's a risk.
Another member here bought a used one.  How's it doing?

After some other expenses I'll probably get an FZ80 (about $300).

Yes, I am one of those tree hungers.  I love trees.  I burn about 12 cords of them every year.

As for the Canon... It's ok.
Here's my extensive knowledge of photography:

I have a camera.
It is mostly black.
It seems to be in working order.
I know how to turn it on.
I can push a button.
I can probably not cut your head off when taking a picture of you.
[/knowledge]

I like to take pictures, but I really don't know how to use my camera to its full potential.  I'm slowly learning though.  I want to get a different lens for it but not sure what to get.  At certain events, I am one of the few people that always takes pictures with a DSLR and because of that, people think I know what I'm doing and ask me to take pics for them.  It's kind of embarrassing because I look like I know what I'm doing, but I really don't.

I can relate :)
Most of my cameras have features and functions I haven't tried.
When changing from one to another, the controls stump me for a while.

I take a lot of bird pictures, so a LOOONG lens is important to me.
300-500mm in my price range for the DSLR (35mm equivalent focal length of 450-750mm), and the 60X of the FZ70 (equivalent 35mm focal length of 1200mm).
What's nice is both cameras have in body image stabilization.
Most of the Canon lenses have the image stabilization in the lens itself.

Practice more.  Just like our other shooting pass time, practice more :)
Digital 'Film' is FREE :)
What lens do you use the most?

Tried a few macro shots with a DashCam I bought.
A Mobius Maxi adapted to a flipped around Nikon 28-200mm lens.
It's just a 4meg sensor but did OK.

Getting set up for some more macro shots.
Practice, practice, practice.

The left shot is without lens tilt, the right is with.
Count the in focus ruler marks.
Tried a few lenses and tilt adjustments.
The effect is not a change in Depth Of Field but a change in the Plane Of Focus.
Now to try and get some more bug pictures :)

Playing around some more.
This time with a 70-210 Tamron Adaptall lens, a M42 bellows, and the K-r.

Click on the pic for full size :)

RV, in simple terms, what function does the bellows serve as far as the image is concerned?

RV, in simple terms, what function does the bellows serve as far as the image is concerned?

Moving the lens farther away from the sensor (or film) allows it to focus closer.
For example, if a lens can focus down to 3 feet from the camera, moving the lens out can allow it to focus to 3 inches.
Getting things closer to the camera make them appear bigger.

In addition, moving the lens away from the sensor causes the light cone projected by the lens to get bigger.  Bigger than the sensor.  Since the sensor now intercepts a smaller portion of the projected image, it appears even bigger.

Macro focusing lenses do this internally but typically do not give the magnification of extension rings or a bellows.

A disadvantage is unless you spend at lot, rings and bellows lose all coupled automation between the lens and camera.
Manual operation of some exposure functions is so old fashioned :)

A bellows is just one method of focusing closer.

I think a Coopers Hawk in the last post.
We have both Red Tails and Cooper's around here.
Easier to ID when flying :)

EDIT: looking closer, you might be correct, a Red Tailed.

Osprey in the earlier nest photo.

E-cig in one hand, camera in the other, steering the tractor with my knees :)

I really like the Super Zoom.
In this last shot you can see the tail stripes on a different bird.
