Feed malfunction
« on: November 07, 2020, 04:22:37 PM »
I just picked up a Tula 1954 and after cleaning fired it at the range today. I was using Tulammo 122gr FMJ.

The weapon has been used, not soaked in cosmoline. During cleaning, I took the bolt apart and soaked everything in Hoppe's 9.

Whenever I loaded 3 or more rounds, the last round failed to feed. The butt end of the bullet would end up in the mag well and in most cases the bullet would be protruding from the top of the bolt, however in some cases, the bullet would be entirely in the mag well and the bolt would close completely.

I've attached a picture of the bullet, it's hard to see but in about half of the bullets that were misfed, there was indentations on both sides identical to the pic.

Question is, is this a result of the ammo or in the action of the rifle? And if it's the rifle what can I do? Thanks

never heard of a SKS malfunction like that, only thing I can think of is the magazine follower spring is weak and not bringing the last round fully up

Whenever I loaded 3 or more rounds, the last round failed to feed.

Before we go down the troubleshooting rabbit hole,
CONFIRM the above statement.

Last round misfeeds are not all that UNcommon.

Yes failure to feed on last round 90% of time when 3 or more rounds are loaded. Just saw this post http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=135652.0 so could be the spring like Uncle Billy mentioned. I'd prefer a mag problem.

Follower Spring Test.
The last round weighs much less than one ounce.

Take the mag out and squeeze the mag to compress the spring.
Probably will take more than 1 pound of force to compress the spring with NO rounds.
Weigh mag, tare scale, push down until spring starts to compress.
This one held 1 pound, 10 oz before compressing.
The weakest of several but it still works.

Feed lips should be close to contact with receiver.
Rivet holding follower should be tight but not drag.
Floppy follower lets the last round sag, but not the others.
