I have heard that government think tanks are connected with Ivy League colleges and universities.
J.R. Oppenheimer was a Professor at UC Berkeley, and ended up as the Chairman of the General Advisory Committee for the US Atomic Energy Commission. That was a pretty big deal back in the day, and Berkeley is about as liberal as it gets. I'm sure there are numerous other examples of government think tanks working hand in glove with Universities, especially in areas of technology.
