Experimenting with Tula 7.62x39
« on: July 30, 2021, 02:58:00 PM »
I want to share my fun experimenting with two boxes of Tula 7.62x39 - 122gr ammunition I purchased.

First, I pulled apart the bullets and measured the components. Of 10 bullets I pulled, the powder charge differed from 24.1 - 24.4gr, the case weight was either 103 or 106grains, The bullet ogive to base varied from 1.303-1.316".

Second, I separated the components by the same bullet and case weights and averaged the powder to 24.2gr.  The grouping was about the same as the factory load at 100 yards for me.

Third, I returned and shot a ladder test and found the accuracy node to be at 24.5gr of Tula powder.

Fourth, I returned again to the range and compared this load at 50 yards to factory loads to 24.5gr of Tula bullet and 24.5gr Tula Powder, Speer 123gr bullet with 24.5gr Tula Powder, and Barnes 24.5gr bullet with 24.5gr Tula Powder. I used the steel cases. The groups of all three bullets were the same (1") but printed on a different quadrant on the target. All three grouped better than the Factory load. I ran out of time but will continue my test at 100 yards next time.

BTW. I also tested 150gr bullets. The Hornady 150gr SP, Winchester brass, WLR, and 24.6gr R7. The load grouped at 1/2" at 50 yards for me. 24.5 and 24.6 seems to be a good number using R7 for the sks. Has anyone used a different powder like IMR4198 and came up with the same powder charge?
