Any Solar Panel Gurus Out There?
« on: September 21, 2024, 11:31:14 AM »
We just got a new garage delivered. Two car, 24' x 28'. Metal roof, maybe a 4/12 pitch.

It's far enough away from the panel in my house that I don't think connecting to the house power is a good idea.

So solar seems like the way to go.

I'd like to power lights, garage door opener and a pancake air compressor. If I can run more, that'd be great but that would be the minimum.

Any suggestions or reccomendations?

Just wire the garage. NEC doesn't have a length for runs, it's voltage drop at worst. Also you can sell the excess electric the garage makes back in at wholesale rates. So unless you get a huge setup, you'll cut the bill and pay for the cable to the garage and not have to worry about batteries and that mess either.

Use various online calculators.
How far is the run?

I've got a 110' run, in PVC, with 10ga on a 30 amp circuit to a shop to run Saw, Drill Press, Plainer, Small Compressor, one at a time.  Compressor is off when running Saw.
6 or 8ga would have been better ($$).
Any one item running I get about a 5 volt drop.
