How to purchase a supressor?
« on: November 03, 2024, 10:57:24 AM »
I've decided to purchase a suppressor.  I know that SilensorShop.com and SilensorCo.com have some sort of stuff in place to make purchasing fairly easy.  Unfortunately, neither seems to sell my desired unit.

Does anyone have a link about purchasing a suppressor when it's not from one of those companies?

Thanks in advance,

Larry

Find an FFL with a SOT, we aware they typically charge 3-5x what normal transfers to for so if you're used to $25 transfer fees be ready for $75 to $125 if you need to special order it. That said, look for a stocking dealer around you, many times it'll be cheaper and easier than a transfer.

When buying an NFA item, you can take your own prints and photos. Typically I do my own prints and go to a Walgreens for 2 passport photos. FD-258 form for the prints, use a water based ink as it's easy to wash off, though I've used oil based before in a pinch. Painter's tape on the edge of a table to have it help keep the card in place and easier to do it. Test on a sheet of paper before using the card. You'll want to make contact on the left or right side of the print and roll to the other side for the individual prints, and a direct press down for the one with all 5 at once. Sherriff's or local PD might to it for a fee also.

Other than the prints, the process is also the exact same on your end. On the FFL/SOT's side it depends if they paper or efile. Efile is supposed to be faster now. But that always depends on who's in charge and the political climate.

If you can find one in stock somewhere, its usually better to go through them than the online because you also have to wait for their form 3 to be approved and have it shipped to them before you can get yours submitted.  Depending on the dealer of course.  Other retailers like Capital armory offer streamlined NFA paperwork as well as Silencer Shop and Central.  Digital prints make it easier, but e-filing as Danjal said is the same for everyone.  E-file individual from what I have seen is hours to only days wait right now, if your FBI background check is not held up.   Even trusts have been pretty speedy now.

Here is just one of many links that walk you through the process.

After all the BS with the ATF I went through, I'm not inclined to beg them again, though the short wait times have been awfully tempting.

I was at Suppressedfest last weekend and one of the bigger vendors there is actually pretty good at explaining and getting you through the process as well as having plenty of stock.  They're called Capitol Armory and by everything I've heard they're great to deal with.  Check to see if they have what you want, and if not, look through their instruction page to see if it helps.

Form 3 for dealer to dealer is fairly miniscule in the grand scheme of wait times TBH. They've always fast tracked SOT to SOT transfers.

Yeah, but they had been taking longer than form 4 approvals at times lately. Still only talking maybe a couple weeks altogether
not months like before.

Silencer shop getting it together to submit has been more problematic so I hear, taking up to a month in some cases to 'certify'. I know I waited on them for 2 weeks when I did mine, it was nearly a month to finally submit my form 4, from the time I bought one from my local dealer and submit through the SS kiosk, he had to order it, waited like 5 days for the form 3 approval, then have it shipped in, then have SS certify it for submission was a full month. At that point the wait times were from 4 to 8 months so it didn't seem to matter as much.   Now form 4 approvals are down to less than a week, so all that gets frustrating.

They just need to delist them because the entire thing is just stupid anyway.

At Suppressedfest last week, they told us that suppressor approvals had gone down to as little as two weeks sometimes.  This is partially thanks to one of the groups there that's been advocating and pushing legally to hold the ATF's feet to the fire.

Come on Larry, you have to share what you want to get.

Looking hard at the Liberty Mystic X.  I've also been tempted by the SilencerCo Hybrid 46, but the price of the fore end caps I might potentially require is a real turn off.

GunZoneDeals.com seems to currently have a good price on the Mystic X:  https://gunzonedeals.com/product/liberty-mystic-x-multi-caliber-suppressor-8-long-x-1.375-diameter-titanium-tube-with-mono-core-baffle-systemrated-from-17hmr-to-300-win-mag.

Well mark another one I have over looked or forgot about.  Specs look decent. Reminds me a lot of the SD tactical Carnivore which is fairly high on my next one list.

I have one, it's a good can. Check if they finally changed to the 1 3/8"x24 threads or you'll need an adapter to fit common can mounts. My older one was the 1 3/16"x24, which is the same size as COBRAY and other legacy. The new standard thread sizes have a LOT more compatibility.

IMO their Cosmic is a much nicer generalist can, but it's not rated for as high of pressures. My EA Vox is a very nice heavy duty can also.
