How the nanny state persists
Onepoint:
I have been shopping for timber jacks or peaveys for this falls up coming wood cutting.
Like most online shopping led to Amazon where I ran across this gem of a review.
"I do not recall that the description of the product on Amazon alerted potential buyers that the product carried a warning that it might well contain chemicals known to cause birth defects and cancer (Cal 65 warning), but a label on the delivered box did carry such a warning. I know that many people, especially outside California want to ignore or dismiss the warning as hysteria, but I take it seriously; and it is a factor in my decision about whether to buy a product; and, all other things being roughly equal, I prefer to buy one that does not carry (and does not need to carry) such a warning.
Moreover, I arranged with Amazon to replace the first one I ordered with what I thought was a similar (but not identical) product, asking for assurance that its replacement carried no such warning. And, lo and behold, it was the very same item, carrying the very same label, and I wound up returning both boxes."
1st of all, this is for a hand tool made of steel, which itself made the cancer causing list, but is also painted, and that reaches the level of apocalyptic threat level according to nail biters. Yet chemical exposure from it will probably be less than what it comes shipped in, unless they are licking it or something. (granted, it is CA, so who knows.)
But the idea that this warning carries any weight what so ever, when literally every single manufactured item, and most natural ones fall under the California requirement to have this label make it meaningless. And further, to expect the mere labeling to make a product "safe" or not is beyond naive.
The fact that there are people like this who heed and give authority to the state in the guise of protecting the people with such blatantly stupid regulations, and demand others comply is why states like California are a modern dystopias. I don't think its a stretch to think they are still wearing masks, alone in their car, as they drive down the highway and constantly wring their hand with sanitizer. I wonder did she don the hazmat suit to return it? (and for the record I have no idea of the actual sex of the reviewer, but the man card is hereby revoked if so)
The "protected" make their own prisons.

Aren't those prohibited in California???
You can't cut a tree down.
You can't cut up a tree that falls down.
If a tree falls on your house, it's your fault for building the house where the tree could land on it.
If a high wind blows a tree over, it's Gods fault and the tree huggers are trying to get Him in court.
You have to get a permit to own a chainsaw in some counties. If I lived there, I'd be playing a recording of a chainsaw all day long.
I imagine that's why I live in Ohio.

Because the consequences for violating CA Prop 65 are extremely severe, almost every manufacturer places such a warning on every product, whether it might need it or not. Hence was supposed to be a helpful warning is now a useless joke.

Heh, I was just thinking when I read that it could be an episode of 'unintended consequences'. :)

They have to be electric, if they are used by manual labor it makes you breathe hard and emit more CO2.

In a sad sort of way, I feel sorry for the person who left that review . . . he actually thinks the warning is useful. But since .GOV told him it was so, it just has to be true . . .
