Atomic Bomb & Japan Poll - Yea or Nay
busdriver72:
There is a lot of debate on this. In view of all that was going on at the time, the atomic bomb option seemed preferable to an invasion. Japan had a "no surrender" philosophy, there was a military "coo" trying to stop the emperor from surrendering (which failed...but who knew?) With the info we had a the time, an invasion of Japan would have made D-Day look like a cake-walk.
Was the atomic bomb needed?
What do you think, and why?

From what I've read, the US estimated hundreds of thousands of casualties resulting from the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. Considering some of us may very well not be here today had that occured, I voted yes.

The History Channel is currently running a story on this very topic. They make a compelling argument for the bomb. If we invaded we would have lost hundreds of thousand of lives not counting wounded. The Japanese would have lost the same or more. It is interesting to note that conventional bombs dropped on the Japanese accounted for more lives lost than the atomic bombs dropped. Also, think about the fact that it took two bombs to get them to finally surrender. Even then they insisted we let Hirohito remain emperor, which we did, eventhough we called it an unconditional surrender. If you ever study the atrocities commited by the Japanses during WWII it is clear they didn't deserve any mercy. They were as bad as the Nazis or worse.

If you look at the losses in the pacific islands, it seems like the right option 100% in my mind. Just look at how hard they fought at Guadalcanal, Guam, Tarawa, Siapan and Iwo Jima. If that doesn't do it for you, look at how they treated the Chinese, and the POWs. It would have been a suicide mission to try and invade Japan. The bomb was the only way, it saved our boy's from being 6 foot under. You can't look at it now, and say "We are so sorry!" They were the enemy, and the only way to win was to destroy them. I just wish Truman was president now.
War is hell, so what, you messed with the big dawg.
Fragger:
I actually know a few WWII vets that still hate the "japs".
Ask them if dropping the bomb was the right thing to do and they'll tell you it was the LEAST we could do to them considering what was done to 'our' boys.
I wasn't there nor do I plan to second guess if it was the right thing to do.
I'll leave that up to those who whish to respond that were living the day to day hell of WWII.
