Recommend a POSP Scope for .223 Saiga

(1/2) > >>

UR:
I have a Saiga .223 that I'd like to scope with a Russian POSP, but I'd like to get opinions on magnification before I make a purchase.  Does anyone have any experience or suggesitions in this department?

If possible, I'd like to get something versatile enough to interchange with my Saiga 7.62x39, but if it's not possible...

I'm sorry I can't answer your question, but I'd like to hear opinions too. I've longed for a POSP that was specifically designed for the 7.62X39 with multiple chevrons and 400 meter rangefinder for some time. They're around but I just never trusted their quality. Plus, I've seen too many single chevron POSP scopes out there which are obvioulsy copies.

As far as interchanging between the .223 / 7.62X39 I couldn't say. But I believe at 100 yards there's not much of a difference. I think a red dot sight zeroed in at 100 yards would be more interchangable than anything else.

I welcome opinions and hope this topic gets dicussed further.

I dunno but I ran across this one on ebay yesterday.  Am I missing something or is this a great price???

Just some thoughts...

I'd avoid the version with the BDC -it is WRONG for the caliber. I'd be sure it is a MOA indexed version.

The magnifications are probably NOT as important as being sure it is one of the POSP scopes that has a (diopter) "focusing" rear objective -some don't.  The power choices are usually 4,6 & 8X.
The 4X was the original military choice, but I understand that 6X is the current choice. A 6X seems a good balance -I use one.

Oh yeah! Here's a FLASH that I almost forgot (that nobody seems to ever indicate)...

Unless your Siaga sporting stock AK is SHORTENED in a PG "conversion" -there is INADEQUATE EYE RELIEF to be able to effectively use the rather forward mounting POSP. I discovered this the hard way...AFTERWARDS!!!

You will also have some decisions regarding illumination...

There is a unlighted version, but most will be illuminated -a red LED being the most common, but other colors available (green, orange & white).

Further, there are TWO LED voltages used -a 1.5 volt and a 3 volt. The 3 volt has a compact battery compartment, but requires the lithium "button" battery(s)...they can be had commonly and are inexpensive.

The 1.5 volt battery compartment has a AA battery adapter, or now more commonly, comes set-up for a AA batery. This will have a large battery compartment...but battry use is obviously as cheap & common as it gets.

A side note: It appears that it is not unusual for these scope to fail to illuminate -the contacts can be loose, and, sort of "oxidized" with this grey appearance. Clean & tighten, and it will work.

Another complaint is that the mount is loose enought to lose zero -there is a tutorial for adjusting tightness of the mount on Tantal's site ("automats in action") in the optics & applications section.

Be aware that these scopes, as with almost all former combloc mounts, do not mount OVERBORE...but are normally off-center to the the left.

There recently has been a POSP scope that uses Weaver rings, that adds to the options.

Lastly, the BDC/MOA "drums" can be easily changed on the scopes -I'd get a spare in the other calibration than came with the scope.
BTW, the BDC is based on the 7.62x54R round...and very equivalent to a light bulleted .308. to my knowledge, there are not other caliber BDC "drums" available -you could, simply, just remark the drum scale to your choice of ballistics.

The POSP range finding reticle reticle is designed for best use using a BDC -there is a tutorial on the POSP use also at Tantal's.

Sounds like you have some choices to make after a little more research. You can sort of tell that it is not your daddy's Bushnell. Have fun.

My POSP 6X on a .308 Saiga...note the shortened stock.

Onepoint:
I dont have a POSP scope, I dont care for the reticles on Russian scopes myself all the range finding crap tends to cluttter the sight picture, and makes tracking shot harder than it needs to be.  I don't think you will be able to swap it without rezeroing for each rifle if thats what you were wanting, even 2 223s will have different POI as I found out.  But you wont know until you try it, they all shoot different and you may luck out.

As far as magnification goes depends on what you are doing and what you like.  I tend to like 3-9x scopes if I am going to try and use it for anything smaller than dog sized critters and dont want a full blown varmint scope.  But for a general plinking or predator control, I like 5x or 6x fixed.  I have a BEC 5x 223 mildot scope for my Saiga and I really like it.  Good enough to see distance, but is still useable close up.  4x is OK, but if I am shooting much past 150 yds it isn't quite enough.  Of course if you live where the ranges are a lot less because of a lot of trees or hills etc, more magnification sometimes works against you.

Besides Freedom optic and Kalinka, these guys have some decent prices on them, if you found them cheaper lets us know.  http://posp.ru/pr_i.html

There are amounts that do mount over center, but the scopes with built in mounts dont usually.  I did see one that did but I dont know what model it was.  The factory Saiga mount with built in rings is centered.
