It's kind of hard to beat a Woodsman's Pal. Perfect for clearing a campsite or getting your butt out of trouble.

Sorry! I didn't actually forge it myself, but I AM going to be learning the art of blacksmithing from a master arms-maker in the very near future, so I'll have some work to show after I've been banging on some steel for a while!

Tomahawk in one hand and a Gerber Mark 2 in the other.

M48 type thrower and K-Bar. I also have the Glock knife as back-up and a CRKT double lock blade.

Honestly, my choices are rather limited. I have a small camping axe that would certainly split heads, but right now, my go-to is going to be my M7 bayonet fixed to the front of my AR-15. It's a gun, it's a knife, it's a ****ing spear!

  That will work for a person or two, and then something plastic or thinly made on the AR will break.

Your absolutely correct.  AR don't take to butt stroking well.  Neither do the Ithaca 37 shotgun.   But a M1A, FAL, or wood stocked AK, a whole different ball game.

Agreed When I throw the wooden stock on it though, it seems to be significantly tougher, and it removed all of the plastic I can find. Ideally, I'd like to have something as a dedicated melee option, but right now, all I have are bayonets (SKSs, Garand with a bayonet, M44, AR-10 with a bayonet, etc...)

 The SKS, the M-44, the Garand with a bayonet are all formidable, and sturdy enough in their original trim to withstand a lot of close-up use as bludgens and pikes, while still serving as rifles for slightly longer work....

 For SHTF crowd stuff, they would work a lot better.....

Agreed, they're more rugged, but if I'm going to be doing a lot of shooting, I would like the ergonomics of the AR. Tough choice...

The main weak point on the AR is the buffer tube.  They break off on the butt stroke.  A wood stock won't change much.

I'm pretty bad ass with a slingshot.  My favorite is a non-wrist brace type, and I'm quick and accurate with it.  I'd just about bet that I could keep any three guys off my ass if I started working on them from twenty yards out.  jd
