Crank Radio
« on: October 05, 2014, 04:38:02 PM »
Does anyone have a crank radio that they'd suggest to purchase?
There's so many out there and I've heard a fairly mixed reviews about them all together. Such as how some of them have just outrageous "features" such as a USB charging port that works soley off your ability to crank 10,000,000 to get 1% off your iPhone/whatever you have...

I have one of the original sangean's. AM FM and basic shortwave AM.

Built in South Africa for 3rd world conditions... It's always worked....

I'd have to say, having the ability to charge a USB powered device would be a nice thing to have..

Another option instead of a hand cranked radio is a simple battery powered radio and lots of rechargeable batteries...

Power for the batteries would come from a traditional generator, or even some kind of exercise bike setup.

Radios listened to at low volume or with headphones are very, very easy on batteries. Lighting is much worse..

 I have a C-Crane Solar Observer that I like a lot....

It's battery, crank, and it also has a solar panel on it....

I have an Eton, I've had for six years. It'll charge a phone, and has emergency weather channels. Also a flashlight.

Not bad for $35.

I have two the CC Solar Observer and the Ambient Weather WR-112.  My favorite is the CC Radio due to the fact that it will take AA batteries as backup while the WR-112 uses a 3.7 volt Lithium rechargeable batter which are not as common but I like it just about as good.

Both radios can use the hand crank to charge your cell phone or other electronic devices.

Extra batter and accessories for the WR-112 radio.
