cheap body armor.
« on: June 04, 2015, 10:52:36 PM »
Body armor can be really cheap if you know somebody who does metal working. A friend of mine bought a 4ft x 8ft sheet of AR500 steel for around $500, he had his brother in law who works at a welding shop cut it up for free. Got 32 plates that measure 10in x 12in. =`S out to $15 a plate. Sure they dont have spall guard on them, but only $30 for front and back plates that stop armor piercing rounds from an AK47 or AR15 is a good deal IMO.

A buddy of mine is in the police an his vest has a pouch for a plate carrier in it. They don't recommend it because apparently years ago an officer had a plate and the bullet ricochet  into his head.   I'm not sure if it is police urban legend but I like the looks of the AR500 Armor stuff http://www.ar500armor.com/ from the test I've seen there test videos and the  coating catches most of the fragments.  I think the plates need to shaped in some way to help with protection. AR500 steel from a reputable mill is still AR500 steel. It will stop a .308 bullet, just the same as commercially produced Ar500 plates. Only question I have is how they were cut. Anything with heat will F up the hardness of the Ar500 steel. Hydro cutting would be the way to go.

Spray with Rhino truck bed liner for spall guard.

My Tactical rig includes a plate carrier with AE500 plates. Heavy heavy heavy. Get rready to sweat.

Most of the plates I have seen are contoured or curved around the torso not sure if this is for a more comfortable fit or for better/proper deflection. Might want to find that out before trusting them to be better then commercial ones if there is no real difference then good on you and feel free to send me a few panels. :)

As long as it's not cut with an Oxy/Acetylene torch or something, I wouldn't worry about it... Maybe even then...
These two targets have a special permanent place on my range and get shot at a lot.  I'm still putting these targets through their testing and nobody can tell a difference other than the shape.

wbtabdabp, I am not sure what company he used but there a 4-5 in our area. I live in North Central California, if you do too I can give you some names. PAX, I do not have any steel core ammo, but I bought a couple extra plates for targets and they have taken plenty of rounds from my sks without any punctures. Not sure how they were cut, but he said his brother in law had to write a program for the machine to cut it. They were given bends with a hydraulic brake/break.

If that's the case; have someone line them with Rhino lining (or do it yourself) for spall guard and you are done. Your next step is picking up a plate carrier.

Here is a link to a guy that makes plates out of Mil-A-46100 steel which is supposed to be a bit tougher than AR500 https://www.maingun.biz/Patriot_Plate_s/2003.htm

No affiliation just another option.

Bat Boy, I called Line X to see how much it would cost to have them done, the guy told me if he was already doing somebodys truck, he could spray them for $70. I think that price is absurd. We are talking about plates that are 10 inches by 12 inches. Everybody keeps mentioning you can spray it yourself, I went to Lowes and couldnt find anything. But I am not too worried about it, chances are I will never be in a fire fight and if so, I will have much bigger problems than fragmentation.
