I've always thought about doing the battlebox thing, but I've never been much of a "grab bag" guy. I love seeing the things that come in the boxes, and if it's something I want, I'll just go buy it. Glad it's working out for you though!
I hear you Scratch. You definitely need to be in it for the fun factor to enjoy this kind of thing. If the money is a concern then it helps if you enjoy online selling like I do. Lastly, Battlbox has helped to reign in my online spending because, even though it is a monthly fee, I tend to not buy stuff throughout the month because I know a box is coming.
I constantly buy and sell gear online. Guns as well. I truly enjoy playing with guns and gear as well as selling so that's why I do it. I've made a lot of money doing it too. Enough so that I could afford Battlbox anyway. I'm not rich by any stretch but I've found a way to make my hobbies fund themselves. My paycheck money has not once covered the cost of a gun or gear purchase since 1999. Just trades. I learned the skills working in pawn shops in downtown St. Louis for decades. I'm so glad to be out of that element but some of it stuck with me. Buy cheap sell high.
For years my wife didn't understand why I would buy things like my Army buddies bringbacks. She would get mad about the expense. Until i sold them for twice as much as they cost us. I don't have a knack for business, nor a knack for following stock market. The only thing I've ever had an interest it is surplus and guns value. I keep what I want of a bundle and sell the rest for profit. I have everything from BDUs to boots, backpackers, sleep systems, chest rigs, hydration, rain gear, helmets, gas masks, night vision for driving edc... Buy it cheap and sell it for just under going rate.
One thing they've really done is get me into my bags every month to see and compare my old items with the new ones. This is exceptionally great if you have things like a bug out bag, a get home bag and a daily carry bag. And a vehicle bag. How about a medical bag. Bagbagbagbag.
Lastly though I think it's an amazing subscription for a father/son. You get to speculate all month together, then you finally get to see what's in the box and go test the gear. It has really gotten my 6.5 year old boy interested in outdoor stuff. Anything to get him off the freakin' iPad and Minecraft!
