Romanian I Picked Up
« on: September 10, 2016, 09:28:35 AM »
Picked this 1960 up last weekend to fill the Romanian spot in my collection; everything matches but the gas piston, and it's 4 digits off.  Rifle is in excellent condition with correct sling, and looking at the condition of the gas piston and bolt face, doesn't appear to have been fired, at least past a test fire.

Nice rifle.

The Romanians are my favorite shooters.  Very smooth action on them.

Beautiful, I got lucky about a year ago and found one all matching. I also have the correct sling. Great shooter.

It looks like you tied it to the back of your truck and drove to and from work for a week

The 'previous owner'  probably spend more time carving trench art that shooting that one :)

The stock does not appear damaged.  It just looks like some fantastic Romanian fish scaling.  Its the type of wood used that creates that effect.  Most I have seen are much less dramatic than this one.

It looks great.

I zoomed in, guess it ain't trench art.
Wife's got a T53 Chinese Mosin that has the 'smuggled out in the back of a gravel truck look' :)

Nope - not trench art or damage - the stock is nearly perfect.  It just has a ton of "fish scaling" on the left side (right side has some, but much more subtle).  Guy I bought it from thought it was Chinese, and referred to it as a "laminated stock".  Pretty unique, I don't see many online like it.

I'm happy with it, will be one of my keepers for sure.

I must say it again...

That is one gorgeous Rommy.  The fish scaling on side A is absolutely wonderful.. Side B looks great too.  :)

Most of those T53 nowadays are like that.  I picked up one really cheap but the stock was in terrible shape and you got splinters just holding it.  Unfortunately I had no choice but to refinish the stock.  Still working on it but it's much better now.  I wasn't too interested in it's historical value since it was a T53 and I wanted something I could enjoy in other ways than looking at it in the gun cabinet.....like at the range making fireballs  :)
