I took my 7-year-old on an overnighter to test some gear and brought this thing along. It worked really well! It was 26 degrees Farenheit and we were able to stay warm enough to not wear coats. We cooked brats and beans on top, boiled water for hot chocolate in the tank and baked potatoes and corn on the cob in the tubes. I do plan on modifying the door so it's easier to clean and so I can slide in an ash pan. I want to prolong the life of the barrel by keeping the hot coals from lying directly on the bottom.
The only hitch in the trip was when we woke up this morning and my glasses were gone. We crawled around for an hour before we found them! Of course they were in the first place I checked, which I also checked several more times after that. Finally my son saw them. Without correction I can literally only see 4 inches from my face. Almost bad enough to require both contacts and glasses at the same time.
I'm not sure I'd like to cook on this thing inside a shelter. I imagine it would get way too hot inside. But not bad for 70 bucks. It did its job and I'm sure would heat a tent very well.
