That's sad.
Generally, the more expensive the better, but I've got Hi-Tech and 511 corporate near me. They both used to have a parking lot sale with deep discounts. Additionally, Hi-Tech offered their "demo" shoes for dirt. They were only in size 9, and had a hole drilled in the sole, but a squeeze of Shoe-Goo fixed them right up. At $10 bucks I picked up 5 pairs of tennis shoes and 7 pairs of hiking boots. They're a tad big, sole inserts dialed them in.
The 511 brand was equally cheap with no size restriction, and I got a few pairs in different styles of those for myself, and a pair each for my boys.
I bought a few pairs of hiking boots, when a couple sporting goods stores and a back packing out fitter shuddered. Got tents, filtration packs & sleeping bags too.
Years ago, my boss was a Justin dealer. Their blems were also cheap. I got the last pair of elephant hide offered. My mom was a Stuart McGuire dealer, 15 pairs of cowboy boots, some on their 3rd resole, 12 pairs of hiking boots (some resoled), 4 pair of black tactical boots, bunch of tennis, but only one pair of wedding/funeral shoes. I have boots over 35 years old. The best I've had were made out of Kangaroo hide. Costco has seasonal wool blend socks for a good buy. I pick up a dozen or so when they're on the floor.
Red Wing & Danner are great but $pendy.
Don't forget about the skibbies. PAX
