Romanian price help
« on: December 10, 2017, 06:18:55 PM »
What would be the price range for an all number matching including stock Romanian sks? It is used but the wood and bluing is as close to mint as I've seen on a used rifle. I'm familiar with Chinese but the Romanians I don't have as much knowledge. Thanks

The romanians are a VERY desirable version. The best made in fit and finish of all the sks. Neck and Neck with the best Russians. What they are worth and what they are selling for are two different birds!   With the average chinese and yugo going for 350 to 550 -- the Romanian is well worth 650.00. BUT, no one seems to be buying them in this market of the last few months. The last few at shops and on the auction boards I saw sell have been in the 425.00 to 450.00 range.

This one will cost me $600. You can't find a Romanian around here and when you do its beat to hell and high priced. The one I'm looking at is unbelievably clean. The original wood finish is all there and bluing is excellent for the age.

That would be top dollar, but the rifle is top tier. I've been on the hunt for one for over a year, but don't want to pay more than $475. At this point, I'd snap one up if it came close to that. PAX

Do you know the year and serial number?
There are some very uncommon serials from 1957 with PS prefixes-- and handful of them with no date stamping.

In what part of the country do you reside?

or, more to the point: are you in eastern PA?

I would say 600.00 is a fair retail price for a VERY clean Romanian.  I am in WNC too and have not seen an unmolested Romanian in several years. If you are buying from an individual it is likely they know a little about Romanians. If i were in the market now, for a Romanian, I would not hesitate to make the buy. If ya wanted to buy the finest sks, the Romanian is the ticket.  There were not many top tier Romanians imported. Most of these  were bought up at the distributor by people in the know.

I know a couple of collectors who visited a few distributors and hand picked their Romanians when they arrived.  Maybe there are some clean ones floating around in  the west, but the distributors here in the South and south east are kind to some known collectors. Visiting their facilities and hand picking some imports is not uncommon.

The shop in Canton was the last place I saw a Romanian for sale in the area. It was in a ramline folding stock and missing the original mag and handguard. If I remember correctly they were asking 525.00.   I considered bargaining and restoring it, but I have to many unfinished projects as it is.

With Albanians selling in the 800.00+ range- 600.00 for a Romanian seems reasonable to me. Of course we would all like to find that sleeper on the rack in a back woods pawn shop.  I used to tour a three/four state area hitting every gun and pawn shop i could find listed. Many good sleepers were found. But I believe those days are over.

It was not that long ago we were buying Moisins for 79 to 99 bucks. Look at the prices of a common Moisin now!  In a year or so you will wonder why you were worrying about paying the price for the Romanian. Go for it ! When ya go to the range, let me know and I will bring a few of mine for a show and tell day.  :) :)

In '12 I paid $545 for my 2 Romys ($280 for one, $265 for the other in a T6), when the base for Chinese was $200. Both are forced, and a stock from Clearwater fixed the Tacticool one right up. Since most are mismatched, couldn't tell. If you're wanting a Romy, and it's a nice one, it's only money. I haven't been able to locate a nicer local one to examine forever. PAX

Does this look normal? I've looked at a lot of Romanian stocks and the numbers are usually small and vertical. You can see the small numbers but its hard to make them out. Did some come with the larger numbers horizontal like this? The larger numbers match the rest of the rifle and the small might be the same. Not sure.....

Do I see two serial numbers on that stock? That 1180 looks like it was burnt on
there with a heat pencil...

So you are confident the big numbers aren't original?

Depending on how you look at it the small ones look like the 1180.
