First SKS I have owned.... try not to laugh
« on: September 24, 2018, 02:43:30 PM »
This is only the second SKS to end up in my hands. Scratch that... the third. There was that bullpup too. Any way, this is the first one I have owned and it is one heck of a project. Front sight is busted off, no bayonet, no wood stock. I have a lot of digging to do so I can unearth the beings from within and hopefully bring this back to its natural beauty.

If it's JB Weld then it will get soft and lose strength at about 250F.
Not hot enough to hurt anything.

I am about 99% it is jb weld steelstik. As for putting on a new front sight I am undecided if I want to go factory (it would give me the bayonet lug) or go with a trueshot after market.

Wow, that is a very rough job.  I am excited to see what you can do to bring her back to glory!

I am as well! This is the first project I am attempting like this. I have built a couple ARs but that was with all brand new parts, and for the most part already knowing what the outcome would look like. Now I am searching for used parts and hoping they are not damaged and unusable or that they fit correctly. I know stock fitment depends on receiver and barrel but I do not know enough to feel comfortable ordering a stock that isn't a romy

Your Cugir will also fit into any Russian or early Chinese stock. Later Chinese used a short lug or pinned barrel cutout on the stock.
When the SHTF you better already have it at hand, because it won't be on the shelves when you get to the Wal-Mart land.

Awesome, thank you! I have tried doing research but a lot of sites contradict others. Not to mention I see a lot of words like should, might, and possibly. Or see posts like my brothers neighbors cousin used a different stock but I don't remember what

Average price I'm finding for a stock is about $50. Does that sound accurate?

Thats about the average price range for a stock in good sound shape with all the metal parts still there. Russian stocks with the pretty red shellac finish will price higher. Rommy Stocks usually are well used and have been refinished with occasional repairs, and heavily shellacked. If you really want to bring you rifle to its original glory, keep looking till you find a nice Rommy stock for it. But if you can't find one you like, next best thing would be a Russian stock.Stay away from any stock that had all its metal parts removed, it will be much harder to find these parts and fit correctly.

I thought about ordering this one from sarco, it is listed ar Russian, but the first review on it the person said they received a Chinese stock and the colors were a lot lighter. Things like that are what give me hesitation on trying to bring this back to life. $60 is not a lot, but its a lot to spend on something you don't want

Thats not bad for a Russian. Give Sarco a call and make sure thats the one you are buying. Sometimes they use a stock photo, so you may get one slightly different form the photo.
