I'm looking for a cheap way to carry a good amount of Loaded Mosin Nagant chargers that keeps them easily accessible and quiet. I know about the pouches that come with the rifles but they aren't what I'm looking for. What do you use? I need ideas.

The sks bandoleers work well. If you get the right one you can put for mosin stripper clips in each pouch.

I posted up a while back about using the MOLLE II single grenade pouches on a web belt or LBV. I have 2 on a belt for trekking through the woods and whatnot. I get 5 clips per pouch and they keep quite. That is only 1 clip(5rnds) less than the original but it takes up less room. You could carry 4 which would take up the same room on a belt as the original ones but get 100rnds instead of only 60. Add a Y or H harness to distribute the load and you could wrap them around your belt. The clips are right at the top as well so they are easy to grab unlike some other bandoleers where the clips set way down in the pocket. Only thing I noticed on these though is that the Chinese made grenade pouches are a little smaller in size and don't work. You need the US made ones.

The grenade pouches work great, especialy if they have elastic on the sides like the spec ops brand ones do, (makes the pouch smaller as clips are removed, and the clips are less likely to fall out). They are on sale right now. http://www.specopsbrand.com/tactical-gear/pouches/double-frag-grenade-pouch.html

The Alice compas pouches worked pretty darn well for my 1903's clips, so they ought to work great for the mosin's clips. You can lose the clips if you run while the pouch is open though.

If you already have pouches, and have a bride who sews (or you're functional enough to use a machine), you can do this with something called, "fold-over elastic" around the lip of the pouch.

Strike Hard Gear makes a very good Mosin Nagant bandolier and a pouch to put on the buttstock of your rifle..

I took a dog collar sling and used one of the collars to link both ends together.  Before linking it I put 3 of the Russian stripper clip pouches (the double ones) on it.  It holds 18 stripper clips or 90 rounds if that sounds better.  I can throw it over my shoulder and grab a Mosin and be mobile and well armed.  It's not a perfect solution but it makes a great grab and go combo for around the fort.

Wow, this is an old thread.

Anyways, I myself use MOLLE II frag pouches like Greatguns mentioned earler in the thread. This thread was actually where I got the idea two years ago.

You can actually carry a lot of ammo this way. I built a rig for my M39 using a USGI pistol belt and suspenders. Running four frag pouches on each side makes for 200 rounds (five clips per pouch, with two upside down in the pouch as described earlier in the thread). For a big guy like me, that still leaves room for two 1QT canteens on the sides and an IFAK on the back. If you want even more ammo, you can buy these clips:

You can get them from Strapworks.com. Get the 2" model, they're $1.25 a piece. These are just like the clips used to attach the suspenders to the top row of eyelets on the belt.

You clip them on the bottom row of eyelets, and slip the MOLLE straps of the pouch through the clip (may take some force as they barely fit through). Then you can have a second row of pouches below the ones on the belt. Criss-cross the straps/snaps on the bottom row to help keep the pouches from flopping around. And presto, you have 400 rounds of 7.62x54mmR readily accessible! You will have to raise up the suspenders though, almost like a chest rig. If you don't like this, you can still carry 300 rounds or so this way either in a  "4x2" or a "3x3" configuration on each side, leaving the front more open so you can lower the belt without the front pouches obstructing your legs.

My personal rig has 300 rounds. A bit overkill for a Mosin? Yes. Awesome? Heck yes!

If anyone is interested to see, I'll take a few pics and post them.

Here we go...

As I described, ammo pouches in a 4x2 configuration, canteens, IFAK. I need to make room for a handgun and a bayonet, so I'll probably get more clips and move them to a 3x3 configuration.

From behind you can kinda see how the bottom pouches connect:

Here's some closer images of how everything is attached. Note how the MOLLE straps of the lower pouches are criss-crossed for stability, since they would be dangling freely otherwise:

And here's the real money shot, showing how the clip is routed through the bottom row of eyelets, and how the MOLLE straps are looped through it:

To get five clips in each pouch, you have to put two in upside down, as so:

Hope this helps.

Make room for your bayonet? You're carrying a Mosin. Here's where you put your bayonet:

Why would you put your bayonet on your belt?! How will you stab people while you're busy reloading?!

Seriously though, that's a pretty neat set up. Thanks much for the pictorial. Do you have a scabbard in mind for your bayo? Or were you talking about more of a knife type bayonet?

My only Mosin is an SA marked SKT M39, which uses a blade type bayonet. The bayonets are rare though, and since I don't want to pay more than I paid for the rifle, I'm going to try and find a reproduction. I hear they are of good quality.

I'm trying to decide what handgun to put on it though. Either my 9mm Sig 229 Elite Stainless, or I'll SBR a 91/30 and make an Obrez. After all, what a better backup to a Mosin rifle, than a Mosin pistol? And after all, we always hear of people talking about having a rifle and pistol in the same caliber being convenient, but then they recommend wimpy calibers like .357 or .44. Why not 54r?  8) [/sarcasm]

Seriously though, I'm glad the pictures were helpful, and that you enjoyed them!

For a minute I thought those were a bunch of Strike Hard Gear mosin pouches. The difference between the surplus and ours are that the SHG pouch has an elastic band across the back wall of the pouch for retaining spent clips or cleaning gear.

If you need a bayonet carrier we've got you covered: http://www.strikehardgear.com/mosin-nagant-bayonet-sheath/

I thought the extra wide snap was a decent solution to a vexing problem.

What do you keep in the two pouches strapped to the outside of the IFAK? Just curious.

Phil, I've got SHG stuff for my SKS and AK, including an AK bayonet scabbard.  Can't go wrong with 'em.  I'm an unpaid third party backing up Todd's claim. :)
