Paratrooper SKS restoration
« on: June 01, 2025, 09:53:51 PM »
I picked up a Paratrooper SKS set up to use duckbill mags. I want to flip it back to the standard 10 rounder and replace the stock as this one is pretty ragged. Will the paratrooper take the standard type 56 SKS stock and are there any other parts I need to replace going back to the standard 10 round mag ?

Welcome to the club,
Should meander over to the intro section if you haven't already.
The short answer, no, but you need to know if your barreled action is long lug threaded, short lug threaded or pinned and get the correct stock for the action. If I remember correctly, pinned CAN/MAY fit all three but the threaded barrels won't. Let me know what you have, I might have one if you don't find both items from the same source. PAX

Welcome to the boards. To add to what PAX said, a pinned barrel action will fit in a threaded barrel stock, but it may have some movement in it. A threaded barrel action will not fit into a pinned barrel stock without alteration of the cross-bolt. This is due to the index lug on the threaded barrel resting on the cross-bolt to fit into place. Whereas, on a pinned barrel action, there is no indexing lug so they milled a flat spot on the lower front of the receiver and moved the cross-bolt about 1/8" rearward in the stock accordingly. Also, all pinned barrel stocks should have a spike bayonet cutout.
The best way to tell which kind of stock you have, or are looking at buying, is to measure from the back center of the stock action in-letting to the back flat side of the cross-bolt. A threaded barrel stock will measure 9" whereas a pinned barrel stock will measure 8 7/8". Here's a couple of pics to show what I mean.

Great info fellas, much appreciated. I?m going to break her down on the workbench tomorrow evening after work, I?ll know then what we?re looking at, and I?ll post it up.

Serial number is 2400241. Definitely a threaded barrel. My pictures are to large to post and I?m not sure what to do to make them size acceptable for this boards

If you are using a PC with windows 10/11 open your pics in your Photos app. With each image click on the three dots in the menu bar  then click on resize image. When the resize box pops up make the adjustments to reduce it down to a 300kb or smaller file. I personally like to do that using the percentage option as it's easier to figure than trying to calculate/control pixels. Most of the time reducing from 100% down to 60-50% is enough. Then save as a copy so as to maintain the original file if desired. When finished they should upload. Mac OS is probably similar, but I'm not familiar with that app anymore.

You can also use a hosting site, but I stay away from most of those as they are data traps. I do use this one though as it is open source and I think made by a guy over on AK-Files. https://imgdump5.novarata.net/

Yeah, I think you'd have to upload to a computer to edit or download an app that will resize the pics. I don't see where my iPhone photo editor will resize the pics. Android may be different

I?ve tried the app from the app store to change to GIF, didn?t like that either. PAX, It?s definitely a threaded barre, if you have a spare stock for that you are willing to part with, I?m in the market.

Send the picture from your iPhone to your PC via email, selecting the small size option. Then, save the image on your PC desktop.
