Rita Lessons Learned

I created a website with lessons learned from our Rita bug out. It wasn't SHTF, but it felt like it might become SHTF at any moment.
Rita Lessons Learned

Anyone else have any bug out lessons they learned from Rita or Katrina?

nice link..

One lesson I think I have learned is when I see everyone else running like last year I'll sit and watch patiently instead of trying to be part of the mess.  ONce it is ALL cleared up and the mayor says "it is to late to go if you haven't left yet".. then that means it is time to hit the road =).

I was caught in that traffic and sat there for 8 hours before I said to heck w/ it seeing I didn't even make it out of houston.. then I go home sleep and the next day the mayor basically says we are stuck here.. I get on the road and there is NO ONE!!    it was creepy to say the least.  We got to san antonio in no time.  Seen cars stranded on the sides of the road and thought hey if I didn't turn around that could have easily been my wife and I.

Another lesson is to buy food supplies water things like that before this hurricane season starts up this year.  We had nothing.. No water jugs, food or ice for a cooler.  NO guns nothing!! oh but we did have two full tanks of gas.    I hope we are never that un prepared again...

Thanks.

I had 2 full tanks of gas and extra fuel with me.   I also had food and a ton of water.  I screwed up waiting to cut the hurricane shutters, not thinking I might be out of town when a hurricane headed my way.  I'm already better prepared this year.

Azradok has posted a review of his Rita evacuation (and lessons learned) right after he got to safety.  http://www.sksboards.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2520

I've already started the stockpile for this years hurricane season.  If another one comes our way we'll be riding it out this time.

Lotsa luck with that plan, Azradok.

Some university in Colorado has predicted that Texas has something like a 47% chance of a direct hit this year from a "major" hurricane.  I'm going by memory on that, but it was something to that effect.  You guys down by the coast should just go ahead and plan on getting hit this year, to be on the safe side.

2 weeks of food provisions, enough ammo and guns to arm my building, and enough stockpiles of other necessities (energy mostly), and I should be fine for whatever happens.  It should give me enough time to ride out a storm and have water levels receed to the point where if it's as bad as say Katrina, I can get out.
