Guess who's 922r ompliant now?
« on: February 26, 2016, 11:24:48 PM »
hee hee hee......I've had my Romanian love for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng time now.....time for a makeover....

We got....
ATI Fiberforce stock [3 parts]. Stock and grip are one piece [counts as 2], hand guard is 2 pieces [counts as 1 / total 3] Got it for the trade of my wood stocks.
Tapco gas piston [1 part].
RAK-1 US made trigger set [3 parts].

Total imported parts count is now at 8. If I were to buy US-made magazines, that would count for an additional 3 US made parts [dropping the count to 5] but I don't need them [ATF says 10 imported parts or less]. I could buy US made Followers and floor plates for an additional 2 US parts [dropping it to 6 foreign parts] to go with the imported metal mag bodies if I wanted to....not sure if I want to though. "If it ain't broke........." is tapping me in the back of the head right now...

The rail came with the stock. Dunno if I like it or not. My AK has the side mount for the raised rail....I may end up getting one and a red dot. Not sure yet. I've been using the iron sights for almost 20 years now...eyes are getting old though...LOL

Tapco retainer plate [does not count].
Oversized charging handle knob [does not count]

My Yugo SKS is next dangit LOL.
....So help me God.

Fun from the PRC

Please tell me you live in some crap state that makes you use a T stock

That is what a SAR1?

I would just put a  USA pistol grip on it (1 part ) keep the trigger (3 parts ) maybe thread it and put a USA muzzle nut ( 1 part )  maybe a piston (1 part ) ..Then put some nice wood on there ..Maybe a nice Romny gas block

I mean this is how they came in

At most people just swap out the trigger which does suck on them

also I would ditch the mount it looks to be a bear to get the top cover off to clean

No, actually I don't live in a T-stock state.....but a friend of mine wanted the wood stocks and I wanted polymer. Not necessarily this one but I made the trade because he's a really good friend. He's that friend who won't say "dude, you killed him!" He's that friend that says "Well....I know where we can ditch the body." Not that that would ever happen, that's just an analogy to describe that he's that good of a friend.

I just wanted my rifle up and running [and 922r compliant] while I finished the AR build...and yes, it's an SAR-1. I know there has been a lot of negative chatter about them but I have had this rifle through it's paces and it has functioned flawlessly for me for almost 20  years. Never once have I ever felt this rifle would fail to protect me or my family. Hell, when I first got it I put over 5000 rounds of Wolf  through it without cleaning it. I wanted to see when it would fail - it didn't.  So I know at least I can get at least 5K through it without having to tear it down in an emergency. I did clean it good after that 5K run though. Even the front sight block is straight - something I guess a lot of people had bad issues with in the past. I must have been one of the lucky ones with this rifle because she runs flawlessly for me.

I actually ordered this one from Midway at 1900 hrs yesterday [3/1/16] and it's on its way already:

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/196331/advanced-technology-strikeforce-6-position-collapsible-side-folding-stock-with-cheekrest-and-scorpion-recoil-pad-ak-47-ak-74-stamped-receivers-polymer-black

....and have a Magpul grip waiting to be installed when I remove this stock. The grip is FDE and I'll be cerakoting the stock and fore grip to match.

A lot of people complained about that stock because of the oversized pivot box - and their tiny statures forced them to collapse the stock all the way and get smacked in the face with the pivot point. I'm not a small guy.......@ 6'2" and 240 with gorilla arms, that stock should  be prefect for me.

As to that top rail - yeah, I understand what you are saying. I'm not convinced I like it either. It looks knarly and gives a good sight picture to the front block.........and still will when I mount a red dot on top......but I'm still not sold on it. It's new and I'll give it a sporting chance but if I end up not liking it I'll just get a QD rail for the side. One thing that you are 100% on is the screw in the back where it attaches needs a finger-twist knob. Currently it's the flat head screw that's natural to the mounting block tang. I'd think a thumb screw would be easier to get into the rifle in the field...although I always have a multitool on me.
....So help me God.

Guess who's 922r ompliant now?

Mickey Rourke?

 :)

For what it's worth, I've always kind of liked the Fiberforce stock.  Back before doing the 922(r) parts count became popular (and before there were US made trigger groups), it was the first viable way to modify a MAK-90 and get rid of that awful wood stock.  I wanted to get one back then, but I opted for the Choate version simply because I don't like the Fiberforce handguard setup since it makes it difficult to remove the gas tube for cleaning.

If you don't want to be messing around with internals, the Fiberforce stock is still a great option (IMO).
I am the one they call Cesar.

LOL.

Well, I don't so much mind the Fiberforce stock in its own rite....it's a pretty solid construction as far as I can tell. It doesn't fold though, and that's what I really wanted. The one I ordered not only folds but telescopes as well.

And I don't mind tinkering with its internals...otherwise I wouldn't have suffered the knuckle-busting hammer spring strikes about a dozen times -.- when I installed the RAK-1 trigger group.
....So help me God.

Actually the SAR 1 is one of the more sought after Romanians.  They are commonly placed in original Romanian laminate wood to clone a Md63 or Md90 Romanian AKM.  They gather a price premium in that configuration.

Generally the plastic thumbhole and furniture are value detractors.
But each to their own.

For 922r compliance the FCG (3) gas piston (1) muzzle brake (1) (if barrel is threaded) and a US pistol grip or mag floorplate or follower get the magic 6 US parts done or 5 if unthreaded muzzle..

I numbered your response so I could answer each point accurately

1. Actually the SAR 1 is one of the more sought after Romanians.  They are commonly placed in original Romanian laminate wood to clone a Md63 or Md90 Romanian AKM.  They gather a price premium in that configuration.

2. Generally the plastic thumbhole and furniture are value detractors.
But each to their own.

3. For 922r compliance the FCG (3) gas piston (1) muzzle brake (1) (if barrel is threaded) and a US pistol grip or mag floorplate or follower get the magic 6 US parts done or 5 if unthreaded muzzle..

1. I was wholly unaware of that. At the time I bought this [about 20 years ago], there was much to-do about QC issues...such as bent/leaning front blocks, fit and finish tolerance problems outside 'just' being an AK variant....etc. I gotta' say though, this was NOT one of those problem rifles and has never failed on me.

2. I hear ya. A friend of mine just got his AK but it had this stock on it. He prefers wood...which is what I had [solid btw...not laminate]. He's less fortunate [monetarily] than I and he's 'that good' a friend I made the trade without hesitation or the slightest bit of remorse.
I like the fact my rifle is now about 2 pounds lighter but I just can't "get" with the butt stock. I like the hand guard though....very "magpul-esque" and is solidly mounted.

I ordered this one before it went out of stock / back order status:

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/196331/advanced-technology-strikeforce-6-position-collapsible-side-folding-stock-with-cheekrest-and-scorpion-recoil-pad-ak-47-ak-74-stamped-receivers-polymer-black?cm_mmc=se_service-_-shippingconf-_-shippingconf-_-ProductShippedTodayLink

...and it's exactly what I want in a stock - just not the color. I wanted a black [metal] and FDE [furniture] scheme but I wasn't going to pay $150 for a stock that only had marginal differences in it's design. I got a can of FDE Krylon Fusion at walmart for $4.

This stock folds to the left....and since I'm a left handed rifle shooter, I like the fact the hinge will be left of my face and not directly in front of it. As a bonus, the charging handle and safety selector are unimpeded with it folded.

Also a bonus, the rear sling stud allows for a longer sling adjustment. I'm a big guy and the stock AK sling is a bit short for me - especially when dealing with plate carriers....

3. Yep, I already replaced the FCG and piston. I have a tan Magpul MOE grip ready to install and i'm still waiting for the stock to arrive. I ordered some US Made magazines as well [just for giggles] so I know I'm going to be set up correctly.
....So help me God.
