Mak 90 Underfolder
« on: March 11, 2017, 04:48:53 PM »
I happened upon an old friend from high school as I was browsing the hardware store and we got talking guns. Turns out he had a Mak 90 he was wanting to get rid of. Photos appeared to be a plain old Mak 90 with a ATI Fiberforce stock. He was wanting $600 and I wasn't too excited but then he showed me more photos and turns out it was originally an underfolder when imported! I talked him into selling me 3 Chinese 30rd mags, one surplus "Euro" mag, 3 Chinese 5rd mags, and the rifle for $640. That is where my adventure begins.

I immediately ditched the Fiberforce stock as it seemed pointless on a rifle without an optics mount.

Stock removed next to my NPAP.

I then peeled back the ears on the rivet blocking the underfolder hole and pulled that rivet out. I then cut off the rear tang that the importer had welded on to make the Fiberforce stock fit. After that I reblued the area where these welds were. Unfortunately the welds are still noticeable as to completely remove those I would have to grind into the rear about 1/8" which is removing too much material IMO.

I then installed a Romanian underfolder stock, Romanian pistol grip, and Russian laminate handguards (which took about two hours of hand fitting)

I have a Chinese sling on order and am going to have the muzzle rethreaded for 1/2x28 since the original 14x1 threads have been removed. Overall I am very satisfied with a Chinese underfolder with 7 mags for $725  8) especially considering people are paying that for a Ras 47 that will fall apart in 1,000 rounds. She is by no means a beauty queen but she was made to work.

Nice!  I missed out on a MAK90 with underfolder holes in the receiver a few  years ago and am still kicking myself for it.  Nice restoration job too.  If you don't want to grind the back, you might want to just use a file to even it out a bit.

BTW, the importer probably sold it with a wooden thumbhole stock which is what that tang was for.  The ATI Fiberforce stocks were made to legally replace the thumbhole stocks without doing a U.S. parts swap (those wooden stocks sucked).  Both ATI and Choate made them so they would fit on the same hardware that the wooden stocks had used, but the ATI handguards were awful too.  They connected to each other so you had to unscrew them to remove the gas tube for cleaning. The Choate stocks were much better in my opinion.  I had one on my MAK90 for about twenty years and was pretty happy with it but it was starting to get a bit beat up.  I finally decided to do the parts swap, but the stock was still solid when I removed it.
I am the one they call Cesar.

The back of my receiver looks much like yours.  I filed a bit and then reblued as  cvasqu03 mentioned.  You have a FINE firearm.  8)
Does yours have the cutout for the bayo?

On the handguard? These are Russian handguard so no. I wish it would have still had the original wood handguard but someone along the way ditched those for the ATI stock

I have been very tempted to replace my FSB with one of the polytec FSB with bayo.  259.00 is a bit steep for a bayo and FSB - BUT- they are the only ones that have them.
