Anyone wanna talk me out of a new Taurus 605?
« on: December 10, 2022, 05:49:51 PM »
I'm looking at Taurus 605, .357, 2" bbl, on stainless.

I'm sitting on around 3000 rounds of .38spc. I eventually want to retire the 12ga Slug for deer, and go with a .357 carbine.

I'm looking for something big enough to be comfortable at the range, and still small enough for EDC replacement. Any other suggestions?

Go for it.  It's pretty light for a .357 so full house loads will be fun.
I had a run of 357s years back and still have:
S&W Model 19 4 inch,
DW Stainless Heavy 8",
Python Nickel 4",
and an Astra 3".

A 357 lever action would be nice.
Well I guess my new **** stirrin paddle don't work . I got a like . WTF 😈

357 in any small frame is not pleasant, just tolerable if even that depending on the pistol.   2" barrel would kill it for me, I have a Taurus 605 in 3", and a S&W model 60 2" in 38 SP I inherited. The short barrel is not the best shooter even with 38sp.  But I like the 605 with 38sp so much I have been casually window shopping a model 60 3" to get the adjustable sights as that is the only real issue, I have with the 605, the sights.  The 3" with larger square butt grips is much nicer to handle.

Glock 19

I have a Henry big boy in .357 it’s fun to shoot. I don’t recommend the hexagon barrel for hunting because of its weight, however they have other models that are lighter and I believe have a side loading gate now. Excellent finish, super accurate, and smooth action out of the box. As far as the revolver can help to much. I have a few but don’t carry them due to the amazing amount of high capacity do it all carry guns on the market.

If you plan to carry .357M, I strongly recommend a heavier choice.  I stand corrected, the 605 looks like it’s in the same weight class as the Ruger and the Kimber.

The Ruger SP101 and Kimber K6S are similar in weight and I’ve shot .357M manageably, although not pleasant.  Had a Smith M60-14 and it was downright abusive with .357M, not much better with .38+P due to its very lightweight.  Of course a Ruger LCR would be much worse.   I currently carry a K6S with .38+P 158g Nyclad, when I’m not carrying the G48 with Shield 15rd mags.

I used to suffer from Bursitis of the wrist, or something.
A range trip with the Astra, or the Model 19, 100 rounds and I was good.
30 to 40 rounds with the RedHawk worked also.

Just looked it up, the Kimber is a sweet looking revolver.

I'll fall in with Onepoint: a 3" barrel is far more useful for any caliber to get the bullet up to speed. Especially a .357
Look up these differences in Ballistics by the Inch.

I owned a 2" .38 - and there was pretty good muzzle blast.
My .357 was 5" and had about the same.
I can't imagine what a .357 in 2" would be like.
Wasted powder is all.

Also, the sight picture will be meaningfully better with a 3".
And I think? the Taurus 605 3" comes with a real target front sight.

Basically, that one inch more won't matter in your holster at all, but it will matter in everything else.

I have one and it is fun to shoot, but hard to aim and not very accurate. It now rests above the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Great bathroom gun as it withstands all the steam generated when the wifey is in there.
When the SHTF you better already have it at hand, because it won't be on the shelves when you get to the Wal-Mart land.

I may or may have not bought the 605. It may or may have not drown in a freak boating accident.

They had the 3". I also handled the S&W 60 and a lady smith. I wasn't really impressed with the S&W for the added money. Solid sights. Longer had the pin-on non adjustable front sites. Grip differences were negligible.

I'm going to try that on my wife next time.

Wife -"Did you buy a gun?"

Me - "I may or may have not bought one"

Wife - "Then what is this charge to the bank account?"

Me- "Shhh, they may be listening"

Wife - "Yeah nice try, that's a coffee pot, not Alexa."

Did you get the 2" or 3"?  I didn't care for the round butt grips, Ebay had some square butt ones that make shooting a whole lot better.

2". The S&W small frame grips weren't any better from the factory. I may buy a larger aftermarket set.

I was surprised how bad the S$Ws looked. They looked like used guns. Dirty from the factory fire. The cylinders had rotating scars. The finish isn't even close to what they used to look like. I had to bang the cylinder open it was so gritty.

I changed out the grips with the biggest rounded set I could find on Ebay. Made a big difference. They hold up pretty good in humid conditions too.

I once told the wife that I wasn't bringing in a new gun.

I had just sent it out to be cleaned.

She bought it but my son ratted me out.

Little jerk.
