How do I fix this? Slippy roll pin, Walther P22.
« on: December 18, 2022, 04:21:42 PM »
I have a roll pin on my P22 slide that walks out after a few mags and jams the safety halfway to fire position.

I really don't want to replace that roll pin if I don't have to. The springs and guts in the slide area it holds back are a real PITA to realign.

Any way to stalk or mushroom that thing into place?

When I get jammed up, I pull one of the grip panel allen keys out of the case, and use it to drift the pin back center.

Could you hold the parts in place with a solid pin, remove the roll pin, wedge something in the slot to open it a little?
Well I guess my new **** stirrin paddle don't work . I got a like . WTF 😈

I probably could.

I'm kinda/sorta asking is there a way to mod a roll pin...?

I thought about trying to grow a 4th arm, set the pin to center, and attempt to mushroom out both ends of the pin, by blasting them with a conical punch.

I thought about knurling up the slot by peeing it with a finishing nail, then drift the pin over the knurling.

I haven't done anything yet. Looking for ideas at this early in the repair.

Does it slide out both ways or only to one side? If only one side, I would mushroom out the opposite side only. That way if you do choose to remove it, there is a smooth side to slide through.

I would replace the pin with another 1st, I don't know how much hammering it gets, but those rolled pins like that tend to compress after a while if under sheer stress.  Peening the pin may keep it in but give other more serious problems down the road.

Or it could be bad design that it won't matter what pin is in there, but you won't know until you try another.

Replace the pin by pushing it out with the new pin. That way nothing comes apart.

It just slides out to one side. If I'm shooting right handed, it slides out to my thumb side.

Is this a pin that should be/has to be Walther part?

Looks like #32, which is listed as a 3 x 20 pin.

I doubt it, if I am looking at the right one in the schematic, it's a 3x20mm coiled pin.  Those are harder to find than the regular spring roll pins without going to a fastener place.  3mm is 1/8" 20mm roughly 3/4"

The best "fast" way to fix this is get a small sharp pointed prick punch and dimple the slide steel into the pin hole mouth slightly. Do the right side first since the pin is pushed in a bit. Basically you will prick punch about 1/16th away from the mouth of the hole, about 1/16th away from the raised up finger groove cut wall. Once you put the dimple in the metal, a tiny bit of metal will be displaced into the rim of the hole. Then flip the slide over, tap the pin in until it comes up to the displaced metal and do the same procedure on the left hole. You must put the slide on a hard heavy metal surface like the anvil top of a big bench vise to get a good bite into the metal with your prick punch. If your slide is one of those pot metal jobs, forget I said anything. In that case get a new factory pin, lube it with blue lock tight and drive it in right to left, knocking the old one out as you go as mentioned above.

Dimpling would work or try flaring the pin end with a center punch and not mark the slide or risk cracking or chipping it.  It will take some finesse with something like a small bolt in a vice to rest the pin on while in the slide to hold out the pin out so you don't just drive it out.  And it maybe you might have to do that even if you replace the pin if it still walks.

In critical areas like transmissions and gear boxes where you can't have metal parts wandering around loose they run a wire through and wire those in, so there is that too if you want to red neck it.

I'll give the dimpling a try. Figured I'd ask first.

Thanks. I gotta hit the range next month and run a class.

Oh, I forgot to add, to keep the slide from getting mared up on the vise flat or whatever steel flat bed you use, put a piece of heavy file folder paper under the slide. Its thick enough to protect the finish from the metal base yet thin enough for the hammer punch force to be effective as a dimpler.

I dimpled up the slot and ran the pin over the dimples. I grew a 2nd set of arms, and flared out the ends of the pin. Headed to the range on Sunday to beat on it. We'll see what happens.
