"The Law of Self Defense" by Andrew F. Branca

Just finished reading this book and would recommend to anyone who has a Concealed Carry permit or, who carries under a state law that allows it without a permit. It's also a good read if you keep a firearm for home defense.

This book covers the use of a weapon for self defense and gives you a look at the mechanics inside the justice system that determine the legal outcomes of such use.
Branca covers such topics as Legal Principles & Processes, Standards of Proof, Burden of Proof, criminal justice and legal defense of a self defender.
He highlights the 5 key points the legal system uses to review self defense: Innocence, Imminence, Proportionality, Avoidance and Reasonableness.
Defense of Self, Defense of Others, and Defense of Property is covered..
He discusses interaction with law enforcement, what you should say, what you shouldn't and when to say it.
Finally Branca has a table of laws, by state that cover all the laws and refers to a website for updates to those laws post publication.
He explains Stand Your Ground and Castle laws and when they apply.
The book is an easy read with 168 pages of text written in an engaging style. with another 123 pages of reference tables.
A very good asset to anyone who engages in concealed carry or keeps a firearm in defense of the home.

To the Moderators. I put this in the Pistols sections but, if you feel it would be better placed elsewhere, I won't be offended if you move it.

The only thing I'd advise on top of this is knowing stare and local laws. What passes muster in TX for self defense and home defense will not always pass muster in other states. The same for in your detached garage if you have one, place of employment, and vehicle. Until we manage to get national reciprocity concerning SD, HAD, property defense, defense in detached structures, and defense in vehicles across the board then there's quite a few variables where on book cannot cover it all. That said, I do think it's more than worthwhile to learn how the courts work as well as applicable legal defenses (if permitted in your case).

This book refers you to several web sites that have specific data for various states.

They are constantly being updated so you can stay on top of changes in the law.
