When is good enough good enough?
« on: October 10, 2023, 02:45:01 PM »
Greeting Survivor's, I hope all are well!  I have a red dot sight question. I have been using my current Glock 19 set up at the range for some time now and I think I an ready to start using it as my CCW. It has been on my CCW permit for a few years but I have not entered it into the carry rotation. When is good enough good enough? At what point or level of confidence did you start using a red dot sight on your CCW?  These 55 year old eyes shoot better with a red dots sight than they do with irons. Bottom picture is 10 shots at 15 yards, shooting as soon as I recover from recoil. Thanks guys.

Kind of subjective to the shooter isn't it?  It won't really matter and is not a valid defense to say "The guys all said it was fine" in court.  :)

Do you feel comfy with it, would YOU feel more or less confident having to use it over iron sights in a stress situation? If you shoot better that's a plus off the bat I would think.

Looks plenty acceptable to me for rapid fire, everything is in the intended target center but it's not me making that choice and the caveat to my opinion is I don't use a dot for CC, yet.

I am not pro or con on dots, I would have to use one more on a pistol to decide, my hang up being sight acquisition and that's a practice issue, but they bring the same pluses more or less they do for rifles, and I don't shoot much iron sights anymore because optics are an advantage. Especially for eyes that suck now.

Can you draw, present to the target, and get an accurate shot off without having to
"hunt" for the dot?  I you can, I'd say that is good enough.

Thanks for the reply Onepoint.  I suppose I'm looking for those that are currently using red dot sights on their CCW. What was their experience in determining they were ready to use red dot sights. I understand everyone mileage my vary. I feel somewhat confident in my abilities with a red dot sight. My muscle memory is right on with dot acquisition after presentation.

I guess it comes down to if are you as proficient with the dot as irons. If so, carry it.  If sight acquisition isn't an issue I don't really see anything that would make me balk if it were me.

With consistent dry fire practice using an app (Dry Practice Pro is the one I use) and a little bit of range time I have become proficient enough at red dot acquisition to feel comfortable carrying. Until this spring the only optics ready CC pistol I had was the CZ P-10C with an RMR. Now, if I’m not carrying the usual iron-sight SIG P365 it is its optically-sighted big brother, the P365 X-Macro with a Holosun 507K. This one is the green-dot version and I really like it. However the smaller window size makes good form for sight acquisition even more important. The thin 17-rd pistol shoots really good though.

Using a shot timer in practice I can get off two shots under 3.5 seconds from a concealed draw. With practice I can do it under 3 seconds. I don’t think I’d set the competition world on fire, but I think it’s adequate for self defense. One thing I do like is that when it’s dark, the dot is better than any tritium night sight.

BTW: My Hidden Hybrid AIWB holster for the X-Macro has a kydex optic protector (you need to specify the optic mounted). So a part of the holster comes up and covers your optic for more protection. I don’t know if they offer this on all of their designs, but I like the idea. https://hiddenhybridholsters.com/

Thanks guys for the input and insight.  I believe I am ready to carry a RDS equipped CCW.  If anybody would like to add or share your thought please do so.  Thanks.  -Geo 8)
