Taurus G3 Tactical TORO
« on: March 09, 2024, 06:19:43 PM »
I wasn’t looking to buy a new pistol but I got a deal on a new Taurus G3 Tactical that I thought was good, so I availed myself of the opportunity.

Since I’ve been having some sight issues I thought it might be time to switch to a pistol with the capability of mounting an optical sight. Looking around I found a couple different magazine pistols but then I saw the Taurus and, having had good luck with them, decided to give one a try.

The pistol is the G3 TORO Tactical model. I chose one in FDE/Patriot Brown. This model uses the standard Taurus 17 round Mec Gar magazine which was a plus since I have 3 already. The pistol has a 4.5” barrel that is threaded for compensator or suppressor. Barrel is Stainless Steel with the Taurus DLC coating. It’s 9 millimeter. I thought about going to a .40 but I just didn’t want to add another caliber to the inventory. TORO by the way, stands for Taurus Optics Ready Option. The slide is milled, drilled and tapped for an optical sight.

This pistol has no thumb safety, just the trigger safety. The only other controls on the left side are the slide release and magazine release.

The trigger feels exactly like the trigger on my standard G3. Take-up is a little long, break is clean, reset is easy to feel. It has the second-strike feature like the G2 and G3.

The factory iron sights are suppressor height and the are easily visible thru the optical sight I installed. The pistol comes with 4 plates that will adapt almost any optic to the Taurus slide.

The package I bought had the pistol, two magazines, a mag loader, four optic mounting plates and screws all in a very nice range bag. I got this one for $359.99 plus the governor’s tariff.

When it came to a sight, I’ve never even used a pistol with optics so I was a little lost. Stopped at my local gun store and liked two of the Holosuns. The HS510C FDE has multiple reticles, dot, dot in circle, circle only. Dot is 2 MOA, circle is 65 MOA. Uses a battery or solar which I thought was good. Has the shake awake feature. That sight was $332 out the door. Then she showed me a HS407K FDE. It only has a dot reticle, 6 MOA. Battery only, no solar. It also has the shake awake feature and I really like that. It was $154 out the door. Since I’m new to optics I decided to go with the $154 model thinking I could always upgrade.
Mounting was pretty straight forward. Figure out which plate works, a dab of Loctite and tighten the screws. Mounting screws were provided with the pistol.

I dialed the dot to sit on top of the front sight and have practiced picking it up and putting it on target.
As of yet, I haven’t bought a holster. Any suggestions any of you have would be appreciated. If this thing works as I hope, it’ll be my EDC.

I haven’t got to shoot this thing yet. I’ve sorta been on the sideline since I had my eye surgery but I’m getting better all the time and hope to get this one out to the trail to see how it does.
When that happens, I’ll try to post a couple of pictures my impression of how it works.

Those are nice looking pistols.

I really wanted to go with a Holosun 510c, I like the circle dot reticle, but I just went with a regular dot and can't complain once you put a couple mags through its easy to pick up.

I like the Holosun 510C because the 65 MOA circle gives you basically the same speed advantage of a large 6 MOA dot, yet the 2 MOA dot offers a large increase in precision because the dot doesn’t cover up so much of a target, especially a small target. In addition, I LOVE the solar feature which makes a big difference in battery life.

I would look for tutorials on YouTube on how to shoot (acquire) red dot pistols sights for some tips on what helps you make it work.
If there are guns in the room - one of them had better belong to you!

The only pistol I still have is a 9mm, Beretta PX4 storm. I put a flashlight/green strobe on it. Mounts on the under barrel rail. Why green you may ask? 'Cause I can see it in the sunlight. Can't see red ones in the day time. Great at night though.
