I like the spare cylinder idea.
Experience is the hardest kind of teacher, it gives the test 1st and the lesson after.

Courage is knowing it may hurt and doing it anyway.
Stupidity is the same.
This is why life is so hard.

Of all my C&B revolvers (I have seven) my Pietta "1858" is the most consistent. Remington #10 caps, 30 gr of T-7 FFG and a .451 Hornady roundball, and she's very accurate out to twenty five yards. NO grease, no wads, no extra added attractions, just powder and shot..... I use lubriplate on the base pin, seems to resist fouling and keeps the works going without too much effort.

These are black powder right?  Is this your first foray into that?  I was interested in trying some of these out but financial realities have not let me yet.

Looking forward to hearing your reports.

I have this habit of spending next year's COLA in January so finances won't be a problem :)
Once you have all the supplies these aren't really as expensive as shooting a modern 44.
The 2024 Pietta looks GOOD.

I've given her the reading material and answer questions if asked.  Practice operation at home.  I want her to know this without me acting as the know it all.  I'll have her do everything, short of loading, before we take it to the range.  Maybe popping a felt with a primer out in the yard.
Will start her with about 20gr Pirodex P and .451 balls, with lubed patches, and Pig Lard/Australian Beez Wax mix under the balls (helps prevent chafing).

I'm looking forward to using a nipple wrench on the ol' nipple wench.
Already have a new nick name for her.  Granny Oakley.

Measured length of all 3 cylinders.
The Factory cylinder OAL is 2.016" one spare is 2.018" and one spare is 2.020".
All 3 marked IT 2024.
After getting the long one hot it may be tight and need a little work. Not one to leave things be, I took the front and back of the long cylinder a couple passes across some 2000 grit with oil to deburr and it's now 2.019".

Action seems pretty smooth.
Flo still be practicing swapping cylinders with gun always pointed safe.  Roll right or left not point right or left.

What happened?
I bought a used Pietta 1858 from an individual on a forum on Jan 1st.
USPS picked up on the 3rd.  Made it to Saint Rose, La on the 10th, "In Transit" on the 14th.
30 miles to go and it stopped, Post Office could not find it, opened a case.
DELIVERED today @ 8AM.

Slightly different; grips and no date code under barrel.
So we now have his and hers BP revolvers.

The USPS often loses / misroutes stuff.  My daughter and I used to sell stuff on eBay for a quick buck.  My stuff was left over firearm parts from various projects.  (Her stuff was "girly collectables" -- a eclectic mix!)  I can't tell you how many times stuff would get to the destination post office / distribution center, get routed to another post office / distribution center, sit for weeks, and get routed back.

The USPS is almost as bad as AMZ . . .

With this being a "questionable" article (per USPS regs) I suspect that the hold up was someone had to get an expert to look at the Xray for the nipples.
Package was not opened or damaged.  Other items came through the same route through the distribution facility before and after this one.
The local post office delivered by a "special carrier "?

Sat out on the porch and popped a few caps.
Practiced swapping cylinders, using the capper and sighting .
Smell reminds me of toy cap guns (when you would double or triple up).

Cleaned and polished my trigger guard.

Range trip :)
Took her modified bag and rest to test feel.  Raised both bag and rest about an inch to relieve load on her shoulders.
Seemed to work out better.
Then shot the pistolas.
Shot two cylinders each then she loaded up two more cylinders at the bench giving us 18 shots each.  She's got this stuff down.
Blowing smoke was fun :)
I think a little more practice and we'll have 25yd groups under the 3 to 4 inches we shot today.
Both guns shot about 4 inches high @25yd.  Kick seems to be between 9mm and 45ACP.
Wads and stuff coming out the barrel upset the Garmin.  Had to move it back and out to get decent readings.
Shot @ 25 yards and the Garmin seemed to trigger on the wads.  Slow.
Postioned back and out , about 15x15 inches from muzzle and got velocities around 875fps.
