What does it take to get started in reloading.
« on: September 14, 2006, 08:35:46 PM »
Ok many people seem interested in getting started in reloading. Everyone seems to want to know what it costs.
So i will post what I use. Much of it is not needed. You can get started for a lot less but if most are like me they will want some extras to make life easier.

I refer to Lee equipment because it is primarily what I buy.
After the tax man is done raping me I have very little discretionary income so I try to get the most for my money. I believe Lee equipment meets this criteria.
I have no ill will toward anything else except maybe rcbs dies so do not start an arguement over brand names.
So here is what I started with.

Lee Anniversary Reloading Kit with "Modern Reloading" Manual

Thnis setup works well and loaded many rounds. however I wanted something quicker. I especially liked the idea of leaving my dies setup when changing calibers. So I went with this.

Lee 4 Hole Turret Press Deluxe Reloading Kit with Auto Index

This left me with some extras to help a buddy get started in reloading.  I could have just purchased the press and auto disc measurer seperately but I did not.
Midway offers them if that is what you desire.
Next to make case cleaning easier and nicer I went with this.

Lee Universal Depriming and Decapping Die

Next up is dies for what ever you want to load. I  prefer the deluxe die sets as well as factory crimp dies. In my experience the factory crimp dies are only a necessitie in lever guns and autos though.

Lee Deluxe Rifle 3-Die Set 308 Winchester

nest up you need a case trimmer. lee has a different approach to this. A stud set to the preset length screws into the cutter head. Every caliber requires a different stud.

Lee Case Length Gage and Shellholder 270 Winchester

That is pretty much it unless you get a tumbler or casting equipment.
If you want to fight terrorism start in Washington.
