Begining of my kits
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:21:19 AM »
I've been sitting on these damn things for about a month and a half now waiting for the stars to align. I've got three G kits and am using NDS-3 receivers, G2 trigger kits, and US 4-groove pistons and muzzle brakes from AK-Builder. One will be wearing Polytech furniture and will be professionaly high-polished blue for an old-school look. The second will wear a plum K-Var NATO-length stock set and a park job. I think I'm going to put a side-folder and Polish handguars on the third. Will keep you guys updated.

Not being familiar with kits, I've always wondered... what exactly is the process like? I mean, you buy the receiver and some other parts that match... then specialize it the way you like it? I'm just curious. I'd like to "build my own" AK range buddy, but I don't think I have the know-how.. Is there any gunsmithing needed, or is it all bacically simple?

I'm thinkin' you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other 'til we go away?

What you are doing with a build is replacing the receiver.
You also are replacing enough parts to put you under the 10 or less rule.
I'm not so sure that "gunsmithing" is necessary, but, there are some things
that matter, like the original length of the gas piston on the carrier.
The location of the rear trunnion in relation to the front and things like that.
Reading the posts in the build forum and some of the links to sites that tell
about builds and have tutorals is helpful.
With an all matching kit, you are basically reassembling the parts that come with it.
How much you have to do and know depends on what kind of receiver you buy
and what type of build (screws or rivets).
Most that have a fair amount of mechanical ability seem to be able to do it.
Even a few that don't. :)
