As and experienced deer hunter, I disagree.
I suspect that most of the city Yahoos would first go after dairy cows and range cattle, then the wildlife.  But either way, even if it were only hunters subsistence hunting, without any limits as there would be no control, it would take only a few seasons before the deer population was decimated.   And hunters would also be taking game in order to trade it with others for essentials that they were out of.

Katrina was an interesting lesson for me.  I think it revealed much about what would happen in our cities if the worst should happen.

Just imagine if there had been no help for the folks in N.O. at all.  Do you really think that most of the city's residents would have gathered up and struck out on their own?  I think not.

More than likely, they would have stayed right there, waiting for help, until it was too late.  I really don't think we have to worry about millions of urbanites stumbling around in the woods, trying to catch their dinner.  Maybe some at first, but not many.

It'll be just like it always has been, country folks will survive, and city folks won't.

+2, exactly.

FEMA camps will be the destination for most who do leave. Also, it's not like beyond city limits is untamed wilderness, many with friends and family in the suburbs will travel there, or to other cities. Strangers, churches, and good-will organizations would take more. I dare say not many at all will just "pitch camp" in the boonies. Out of those, not many will stay., and for those who do, not all will survive. Plus if they are found, they will be escorted to the FEMA camp.

The people will be sponged up somehow, I wouldnt worry about the masses migrating into my corner of suburbia. Then again, my Garand is in the closet, just in case  :-$

Do you hunt sniper?  Thats not supposed to sound condecending, but I dont see how it can't... sorry.  I'd believe you 100% either way, just wondering.
Yes I do.

As and experienced deer hunter, I disagree.  I'd pay money to laugh at the sight of a "typical SUV driving, cell phone talking, frappuchino drinking, metrosexual, suburban faggot" (or group of them) try to kill a deer, as the decend into the bowels of the forrest in groups of 3-10
I don't think you're hearing what I'm saying.  They won't be in groups of 3-10.  Urbanites, if forced from the cities, will literally FLOOD the countryside.  And despite what most of you seem to believe, I don't think most of them will just march right into FEMA camps.  Most likely, any event that would force city dwellers to flee the cities in large numbers, would happen fairly quickly.  FEMA camps wouldn't even be set up yet.  In fact, it would take literally years, even decades to get FEMA camps set up for the kind of population numbers we're talking about.

I'm talking about hundreds of millions of people, guys!  I'm talking about the nation's cities emptying out and all those people trampling out into the woods.  Whether they know anything about hunting is irrelevant.  They will destroy the natural habitats, drive the game away from water sources, etc.  And a lot of those one-time-per-year deer rifle owners will be shooting at any game that moves.  Considering the very high density of people out there in the woods, I think you guys are mistaken to think that there will be anywhere the deer can run to hide from people.

Let me say it again.  300 million people.  That's 6.3 acres per person, assuming they were evenly distributed.  Which they will not be.  They will not go to the desert areas, for example.  I would imagine a much more realistic number would be 1 person for every 3-4 acres.  Where are the deer going to go?  That is a very small amount of land.

Granted, a lot of people will be dying in the process.  Either from violence or from disease/starvation/dehydration.  But still, you guys seem to think that it's going to be like normal out there in the woods.  It won't.  Refugees will be EVERYWHERE.  And they will be setting up squatter camps in areas where you may plan to hunt.

I just think it's a mistake to think that city folks won't affect deer populations.  I think you guys are seriously underestimating how many people there will be streaming out of the major cities and spreading out all over the countryside.

you know I watchted part of independece day yesterday and one thing jumped out at me, what happened in other countries? of course I only watched part of it and its been a while since I saw the whole thing so it may have been addressed.

my point is that in these scenarios very few ever mention what other countries will do, especially if its just a US eothwawki, I remember somebody mentioned the UN a while ago.

I bet the UN or maybe China/Russia will be just as courteous and polite when they drop supplies in the urban areas along with little pamphlets on how to say "thank you for the food, gas, and xbox's comrade, and oh yeah, some dudes with guns are in those hills over there" in their perspective languages..

eh something else to think about...

but back to topic, I dont think the deer would be wiped out for a long while, not untill everything else was stolen and alot of folks would be taken out in the process, maybe feudalism would be in full swing by then and you could be executed for killing my... uh I mean the Baron's deer...;)
Why cant people be more tolerant of my intolerance?

Why hunt when you could farm? The hardest part would be keeping it secret from the masses, but it would be the same with any food. Also think about the German eastern front during WW2, as there will be people running around that will make dahmer look like a saint.

I dont know what could happen to make *every city evacuate. One or two cities is more realistic.

How about major disease outbreaks?  Something nasty like airborne ebola with a 7-day incubation period.  As much traveling as people do these days, it would be all over the nation, in every major city, before we realized it.  And once the word got out that it was hitting all the major cities and the disease was airborne, people would literally stream out of the cities.  They wouldn't wait around to catch it.  Would you?

There's that. Alien invasion, some other communicable diease. Right now we can only speculate, but if something were to happen on THAT scale, I have a passport and I might just skip-ship to Ireland or UK, where they speak english and I can live off my ATM card then hang out in the US consulate. Or migrate my way into Canada and get a hotel room until it dies down. Although nowhere is truly "safe"

Spike, I don't know how you could possibly feel safe over there. There's people flying from the US over there just like you are. Not necissarily from your neck of the woods, but all over the country. What I'd do is head for a small island near my coastal area, no way that stuff will get to me.

I'm already on a small island on the coast ;) The island on which I live cant be more than one square mile big, with about 10 or 15 year-round residents.

Living on an island is like living on a submarine. Everything is fine and the world can go to hell, until something bad happens where you are. Then there is no escape. I'd rather be on the mainland where I can dissapear.

If anybody thinks others will be your friend you are wrong. Its human nature (its called- survival of the fittest). Even your family will turn aganist you when the end gets near. When you are hungry - all morals are lost.

Not to divert this thread, but I was curious Spike, whereabouts do you live, if you don't mind me asking.  I seem to recall you saying that you lived in NJ.  I used to work there, many moons ago.  Worked at sites all over the state.
