My little take on stock making
« on: November 25, 2007, 11:22:24 PM »
Well, here's my latest project for my Wasr-10, 1 ak pistol grip and 1 custom ak stock all made out of:
2 sheets of 3/4 in plywood+some alone time with the table saw, scroll saw, sandpaper, a little bit of cherry wood stain, and some coats of clear......

From this:

To this:

Im happy the way it turned out for a first attempt. How did i do?

Good job on the color match.  You've almost got a Russian PK buttstock there:

Inventive. Nice first stab at it.

While I think you did a nice job, here is a little constructive criticism .. if you would have followed the natural length and angle that AK stocks have it would look and feel even better. It appears boxy and too straight to be comfortable for me. This is in no way shooting down your project but next time try going for that natural slope that the AK buttstocks have and you will see that it will look a lot nicer and fit better. Good job though, probably better than most could do on their first attempt.

My suggestion would be to give him his own user group and title. Call it "Special" or "Shortbus".... maybe "Gimpy 'tard".

Turned out fine.  What I've learned is that if I'm going to spend many, many hours on a project I start out with really nice materials.  With what you used there is a limit to how nice you can make it look, with premium hardwood you can step up the appearance a lot.  The amount of time is the same but the end result is far superior.

It doesn't matter what we think, its what you think that should make it worthwhile.

Neat idea thats is unique, looks like something a Chinese type 56. (thats not a bad thing). the color and grain matches great.

Some things that may put me off,  no butt pad, looks slick and hard to keep shouldered in place being flat.  High straight comb, and corners isn't going to make a comfy cheek weld, I probably would have round the top to a 1/2 circle. I would probably have had it drop 1/2" or more. Looks a little long, but maybe its just from it being narrow.

Thanks for all your input. I still need to get one of those screw in sling loops from K-VAR. might order a butt plate from them also.

Though its a bit crude right now i think you are on to a awesome little indeaver.   I have made some stocks myself; though i didn't make any new designs its fun to make them.

I did make a traditional laminated oak stock 1.5" longer than normal.....that was my accomplishment.  Looked factory but felt much better to shoot.   I sold it :(

Good job.
