ARTICLE: China's Ambitions
« on: December 08, 2005, 07:06:50 AM »
Taipei Times

Keep in mind that this article's written by a Japanese for a pro-DPP Taiwanese newspaper... one whose editorial staff is still smarting from last weekend's KMT victories. Expect the usual fearmongering spin, but he's got some good points.

Imagine the entire sub-Saharan African continent being revived by the yuan... the only price is China gets dibs on trade... and precious military bases. And, naturally, they'd probably want some warships to escort their freighters with all the pirates and whatnot in the area...

...okay, maybe it won't be like that. But this article does do a good job of illustrating how the emerging China can be a threat to the West.

China can't provide it's people with running water that is safe to drink due to massive chemical spills.  I'm not too worried about China becoming a huge threat just yet.  They've got a lot of **** they need to get straightened out before they'll be able to achieve super-power status.  But, it is something to keep our eyes on.

Take a look at the nice spy network they've deployed over here.
God only knows what intel they've stolen from us so far...enough to advance several of their programs by decades I'll bet.

I don't think the welfare of China's populace is China's main priority... achieving superpower status is, through a combination of demonstrating military and economic might, mainly the latter.

Think about it. There's 1.4 billion Chinese, and not enough arable land. Furthermore, there isn't enough room in colleges and universities even for those eligible to attend. The only thing that would make the "one child" initiative effective is issuing human breeding licenses and state-ordered castration... and then China is funding an ambitious space program and has its sights set on the Moon. Tells you something, doesn't it?

China's tired of sitting at the kiddie table.

How about this one - China liberates North Korea to feed the hungry and end the nuclear blackmail.  Do you really think we'd stop them?

What then stops them from South Korea in a decade or three?

The Chinese can't even stand having starving North Korean refugees here (unless they're being used as prostitutes or cheap labor), so I doubt they give a rat's ass about North Korea. There's no money there.

On the issue of North Korea's nukes, this issue serves China. Because China is included in the multilateral talks, it demonstrates to the world that China is going to be, if not already, the first and foremost player in the region. Above the "democracies" of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. China holds a lot of sway, and their influence is growing.

China has the same ambition's that we do. And will use all it's resources to achieve those goals. Just as we do.

Mike, we still have plenty of men sitting on south korea's side of the DMZ (38th paralell), so to take south korea they would be starting a war with the U.S., which would DEFINETLY cause WW3.

Geo, you have been vague about it in the past but I have to ask, why in the world are you in that god-forsaken place?

hunter, what would an asian spy have to gain from spying on some 12 year old kid?
check back for something clever later.

You're assuming that indoor plumbing and clean drinking water is as basic a necessity to the Chinese as it is to Americans.  It's an entirely different culture, a culture of hard-working people willing to scratch out a very modest living without needing all the bling bling that burdens Americans.

You're talking about a military force that can reach us with nukes, and has in the recent past shot one of our spy planes out of their airspace.  They are building a naval fleet that could very well rival ours in coming years (especially as we start turning away from super carriers and depending more on small/fast/nimble gunships).

Just remember, folks....

The Chinese kill and tell lies to get what they want because they are Evil.

WE kill and tell lies to get what WE want because we are Good.

Now it all makes sense, doesn't it?

A Taipei Times article that disagrees with my view of China as as a economic (rather than militaristic) threat.
