the stock ferrule did you call it? Has the grind mark like my 49. Yours is a much prettier job but on mine there is a visible weld that I believe filled the original groove for the spike bayonet. I will try to get a pic of mine for illustration asap

The spike bayonet ferrule had no groove at all on the original 1949 version.  When the gun was refurbished, it was upgraded to the reinforced ferrule for a blade bayonet, as shown below.  Later Russian production eliminated the reinforcement "weld".

I saw the lack of the groove when I found more pics of the 49 with the spike and wondered why nobody called me on that one! ;) I do not have near that much weld but some is visible. They hit it with a grinder and removed most of it.

A fine specimen.  Not many others like it.  Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Martin. It's a fun little carbine. I'm not opposed to moving it though. Perhaps we could strike up some sort of trade. I'm sure you could dig up something that'd tickle me. CoughcoughGERMANSKSsnortcough. Pardon me. Summer bug.

I notice the star stamp on the rear sight ladder.  Does anyone know of an Izzy having a star stamp ?  My russian also has a star stamp and a "k" in a box stamp.  Wonder if that makes it a Tula , or not ?

:? :? Dumb question, I thought all 49's and 50's had the 90 degree gas block but I am seeing more of the traditional angled ones, I can't find a 49 for sale any where but I keep looking.

Ronald the 90* block was used on the 49's and on the very early 50's. It was part of the evolution process in 1950 to change the gas block to the more conventional style.

FWIW there are also examples of 49 refurb SKS that are wearing the more traditional 45* slant block. No doubt part of the refurb process.

:-s :-s Thanks for the info, I was able to pick up an early 50 on Gunbroker with the early gas block and noticed it also was ExDDR, and had the bayonet cut for a spike but came with a blade type bayonet. I thought that would be part of the refurb process so would leave it that way rather than replacing it with a spike type. Will try to get pics of it as soon as I get it to post but I am still in search of the illusive 49 Tula, I have seen pics of those that were sold but none currently for sale. I have even started emailing sellers of Bubba sks that do not specify what type of sks for info hoping to stumble onto one even if it's not complete.

That was me bidding against you. I don't think I've ever lost an auction I've taken the time to bid on, til now. I must be going soft now that I'm into my thirties.

Anyway, great score Ronald. That transitional DDR is an awesome piece.

love seeing the early rifles! so cool. i have a 1950 late transitional, with the heavier less machined sight base, early slanted gas tube, friction safety, and spring loaded firing pin.
