Winter SHTF scenario
« on: January 08, 2006, 05:42:18 PM »
I suppose most of you fellas have  a warm or not much of a winter down there. But up here if the crunch comes in the cold months it will be a real problem for most especially the elderly and small children or people (Sheeple) that are not prepared or live in cities. Im sort of pleased to live in an semi urban/rural area my retreat is roughly 2 hours north in a remote area of my Province, Accesseble by Train or 4X4 or  in winter  by Snowmobile. Ive got about a year supply of dry wood along with long term storage food.

Im trying to obtain info on gardening in my region ( best crops for short growing seasons. I have the knoweledge of the indiginous  wild plants, veggies etc,. to eat or use medicinally.

Any thoughts on what  Im leaving out?

I had a real life SHTF winter scenario.  You can never have enough firewood, bottled water, and canned foods.

Temperature here hit 50 last night.  Coldest so far this winter.  I nearly froze my butt off.   :D

Oh and the tile floor was really really cold this morning.  I found it necessary to take a particularly long hot shower.

Option #1:
Move south.

If that's out of the question, have blankets and warm clothing, and enough ammo to make sure you can keep it. I have a friend from Florida who gave their highest recommendation for priority after several people in their town died of hypothermia during a 40° spell.

And don't be afraid to resort to cannibalism. :D

Huh?

There are some parts in Florida where man has literally never set foot.  I'm not suggesting you move to the Everglades, but if you look around, there are plenty of rural areas, where you can get a lot of house for the money and you can still get to "civilization" within minutes (in a car of course).

LOL sorry I should have been clearer. I meant in a SHTF scenario the one major problem may be the city folks might have the same idea out getting out to the remote areas to find game or just be  plain dangerous in regards to taking (by force) what we have. I know I sure as hell dont want to be shot,(almost blown up though   Ive seen one young lad in Bosnia die slowly from gut shot (Doctors were a scarce commodity) A well I have my wife a 5 kids to care for.

Unless you're talking about southern florida, winter SHTF is still possible in other parts of the south.

My own winter SHTF happened in North Carolina of all places.  And it was worse than any winter storm I had endured up north, where I have lived most of my life.

It won't happen.  We've had some major SHTF scenarios and this has just not happened.

1) Everything they want initially is in the city, and they will loot the stores and evacuated homes to get it.
2) When the "peaceful" looting runs dry, they will take what they want at gunpoint from other SHTF survivors in the city.
3) They will wait for the aid they feel entitled to.  They will not venture out into the country, where they know most people are armed and probably much better shots than they are.

Think about it.  Katrina hit, all the cars were useless, so if you wanted to get out of the city you had to WALK.  Where you gonna walk to?

I'd have to imagine anyone foolish enough to undertake this journey would stick to the major roadways.  My country woodlot wasn't even on a paved road until a few years ago (was just a dirt road when I bought it).

Now if some city fool comes crashing through my woodlot and excited my guineas, I'm just gonna be waiting there for him with my SKS.

I've gotten to know a lot of good ol boys down south and I can tell you, no city fool is going to get anywhere in the country during SHTF.

A kersone heater from tractor supply or Lowes like this one http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=93043-000079999-RMC-95C7&lpage=none

I have read reports that a gallon of kerosene can provide the same amount of heat as a wheel borrow of wood.  Other reports say a gallon of kerosene gives 9 hours burn time out of some heaters, so 5 gallons could last 2 and 1/2 days, if you only use it 18 hours a day instead of 24, turn it off 6 hours say from 11 - 5 the hottest part of the day.  To me, this is not a long term solution, since I have 2 and 1/2 cords of wood put up and might even have 3 cords put up by next winter.  half of it is pecan for cooking and smoking the other half is red and pen oak - wood is my long term solution.

^Nice find.

I had never really considered a kerosene heater for heat, but now that you bring it up, it seems like a great idea.

Kerosene heaters are quite handy, as a backup method. I like the fact that when I dont need it it lives in my crawl space and doesn't bother anyone but when I need it I put down the big oven pan, 2" of unscented cat litter, and heat my home.

I rely on wood for my SHTF heat.  #1 - it is an endless supply outside my door.  The winter can be an distinct advantage to those of us in northern climates.  Think pandemic or post nuke looters - now imagine what happens when the temps are below freezing and there is 2 feet of unplowed snow.  That's right - nothing happens.  Nobody treks 20 miles just to see if you have anything worth stealing.  The warmer climates will deal with pandemic.  The cold places get 6 months of reprieve each year.

Got to admit I don't know anything about kerosene heaters.  Can you use it indoors if you ensure it's well ventilated?  What's the by product of burning it?

By-Products are typicl combustion by-products, CO, CO2, and a particular "Pong" to the air until the heater gets going. Well ventalated is the biggest concern, I have a CO detector in ther hallway next to the livingroom , and it is battery powered so it run's independent from the wall power.
